it is a stunning flower i admire the delicate of its petal,(i have forgotten part names of flowers, long time since high school...lol)
yes, the painter can only mirror what God has only created, but then O'Keeffe made its image availible for us all to enjoy.
thanks for sharing that with us, Brooke

Steve, thank you for your most thoughtful comments - I LOVE and appreciate O'Keeffe's art - this is only commenting that the flowers she painted are art on their own without her paintings of them turning them into art. :-) Brooke

spiraled snow white curves
rise statuesque from damp leaves
the calla lily
grows with grace, a work of art
long before O'Keeffe arrived

Holy cow, woman...well that expression just doesn't cut it!
Anyway...i'm leaving it. lol
This is a wonderful descriptive verse about a lovely flower. I've been pulled to paint flowers lately. Will share when done :-)
This touches me.

Your poem is beautiful and so is the calla lilly. Thank you for sharing the information about the painter/artists who have loved to both paint and photograph this beautiful flower.

The Calla Lily is indeed one of those flowers that pleases the eye as well as the soul. Your poem does it much justice. Both the poem and the lily are graceful and pure. Such an enjoyable piece, this is. Rose.

You have demonstrated your versatility with this tanka, Brooke. The words of your little poem match the picture of the calla lily perfectly. I also enjoyed youe author notes.

Very lovely, Brooke. Reminds me of Easter Sunday. I don't know if Easter lilies are the same as calla lilies though.
As for the painting it's beautiful.

Nope, the shape is quite different for easter lilies - but both are lovely. Thanks, Tony. Brooke :-)

Hi Brooke A beautiful discription of this elegant flower. I remember them on the altars at Mass on Sundays. For some reason my parents wouldn't have them in the house, said it was bad luck. Thanks for the background info. Cheers Gaye

Gaye, it's funny the different associations - Charles Keith associates them with funerals but several readers had them featured at their weddings. Thanks so much. Brooke :-)

The calla lily is my absolutely favorite flower, it is a piece of art all in itself. I knew O'Keefe did work with nature, but I did not realize she did that much with this lily to be able to hold an entire exhibit. Nonetheless, because of there beauty, it is no shock to me that so many artist have focused on it that much.
I love the way you gave life to this flower. I think you should have incorporated this flower into on of your personified or love poems along with the other flowers-I believe it would have painted a beautiful picture (just like the one you painted here:) ).
Great job, and thank you for putting my favorite flower on display with your wonderful words! :)
Jaded:)

Doesn't it look like a trumpet, triumphantly standing
erect and taking the applause from an excited public
delighting in the sight of such a pretty flower.

Brooke,

Lovely tribute to a beautiful fower. It seems that every flower has its own beauty and sensuousness. There must be
over 5,000 varieties of flowers, so I look forward to many happy hours of reading and reviewing.

Fondly, Lyle (the tentmaker)

Oh, Lyle, my beloved friend in a tent, 5000 flower poems??? All of a sudden I am feeling a bit queasy. At a poem a day that is more than a dozen years. I better get busy!!! LOL Thank you. Brooke :-)
