Brooke, I wish I had a six for this! It's the best one you've ever written and should have won the competition hands down. Your imagination knows no bounds, your perfect eloquition (sic?) is, well, perfect. I mean it, girl, this is top of the line. Congrats on your second place showing.

Congratulations, Brooke! I'm sorry I didn't get to read this fine poem before...It's difficult to read everything I get every day. LOL..Really nice, sweet poem...This is my favorite stanza:

"Each bachelor's buttons popped with pride
when Pretty showed him favor,
but soon enough his pride would fall
when maiden's fervor wavered."

Such a wonderful love story. I love the way you personified wild flowers for the characters, that was ingenious!! I never would have thought to do that, although in my defense, I don't know the names of them to do so:) *LOL*
Beautiful story! Best of luck (if the contest hasn't already ended, sorry I have gotten so backed up with life it's crazy:) )!
Jaded:)

A well told story in poetry form. Very nicely done, Brooke. It was a nice little read on this Canada Day holiday. You were able to mix in the flower names so very well. Good thing you bolded them, so I knew where to look!

I just read the Wikipedia article on Canada Day - so, Happy Canada Day!! :-D We Americans tend to know little about other countries, even the ones attached to us - if it isn't our holiday, we don't even know it exists. I bet you get your fill of the Fourth of July, on the other hand. :-) thanks so much, Rose. Brooke

Glad you at least took the time to look us up. Canada Day is our day to take pride in who we are as a nation. It is much the same as your fourth of July, but with far less fanfare. It's not that Canadians are sticks-in-the-mud, we just celebrate quietly, and with a smile.

    Cheers, Rose.

My fiancee's draft number was 77 in 1969 - had he not gotten a medical deferment for a weak heart, we had every plan to move to Canada :-)

Well, in my books you are an honourary Canadian. You stand for the same principles that this country holds so dear. We strive for every Canadian to be able to live outside the grips of poverty. Our record is not too bad, but it could be better. We stand for diversity and tolerance of other points of view. (sometimes I fail in that regard) Medical Insurance for all, regardless of income or age. Now, we'll just have to teach you when and how to say 'eh' and what the heck a toque and a double-double is. Happy Canada Day - and just in case I miss it - Happy 4th of July too!

Putting the flowers' names in bold was quite clever! It helped those of us (especially me) who knw so little about flowers.

I loved the poem! There is humor and grace, it tells a story, it's meter and rhyme are perfect, and, most importantly, it is fun to read.

This is a great story in a poem. I think you have fitted it into the criteria. Also, you use an interestng twist with your flowers being the characters. Good luck in the contest!

The flowers are beautiful and goes well with the poem. I like the description of each flower. It evokes images of meadows and fun-filled days.

Perfection! So winsome, such perfect tongue in cheek wording, this needs to go to a gardening magazine so others can laugh out loud as I did. Think about it, eh? No suggestions or corrections, artwork and font only enrich... later and God bless, shy
