Poverty & homelessness. Such a painful shame.
It can happen to any of us.
Then again, our support networks are failing because of excessive greed grabbing all into the hands of the powers that be. Really despicable to treat people as discardable souls.
What will it take to eradicate greed.

Isn't it sad how we treat the less fortunate? The government will gladly give money to those who walk into an office wearing half a dozen gold chain, brand new shoes (whatever the latest, and most expensive, is), expensive clothing and two or three cell phones, but they won't help (or they give an extremely hard time) to those who are in true need and are trying to do something to support themselves or their families-and some times trying your best just isn't good enough to pay all the bills anymore. My husband and I found that out the hard way. We were at an office one day and there had to have been eight or ten people like that waiting for assistance. My husband asked one of the workers and they said they had no choice. Nice system we have going for us, huh? And we are supposed to be the richest country in the world.......so much for that.
I think you did a great job telling of your thoughts (and facts) of the situations that face many people. You should be proud at what you do! I am thankful for what you do:)

Jaded, thank you - yes, those who have literally lost billions through mismanagement and irresponsible spending in their corporations and banks get bailed out and continue to live the high life while working people who are temporarily struggling are made to feel like dirt for asking for a bit of relief. It is shameful. Thanks so much for your most perceptive comments. Brooke

This is just delightful. Beautifully written and presented.
How sad it it, that some folk feel so worthless and are treated so badly that they have no other option but to sleep in parks and under bridges. No friends or family to take them in. One of my dreams is to be in a position to feed, cloth and house these lonely souls. Oh, what a joy that would be :-)

A very wonderful poem Brooke. It's a great reminder of my life's dreams, and not to give up on them.

Have a wonderful day.

You're breaking my heart here...The message in your poem is a tragedy. Tonight when I crawl into my nice warm and cozy bed I will think of this image and pray. I think you are causing me to have emotional ups and downs. LOL...First I read your happy and uplifting flowering poetry, and then I read you heartbreaking and very humbling poetry of those who suffer. You take us from laughter to tears in a heartbeat.

This one is too sad...

Oh my, how very, very sad and true this piece is! I live in a city that is filled with homeless and it breaks my heart. I remember when I was younger how at the city park the benches were there to sit and enjoy the view. Now, they are homes for the homeless. A very moving and effective write. Hugs and smiles, Susanne

Susanne, I'm sorry you are so familiar with the reality of this situation - it's sad we live in such a society that would do this to people. Thank you. Brooke :-)

I love this poem! I think its very cute, I could see someone saying this to themselves as they walk by this "Scene". I loved it! Great Job!

This is well stated and right on target. Incidental benches for incidental souls?

A park bench built for respite
from pleasant Sunday strolls
was never meant as bed
for life's discarded souls.

Thanks for sharing.

The homeless, are like the walking wounded of WWI. They have been blasted on to the streets, and walk about mortally wounded, looking for a place to salve their aching souls. Very poignant Naani, Brooke. You always touch my heart. Rose.
