This is a very touching poem.
I'm amazed that in a few words much that matters can be conveyed.
The author's notes that you have included were helpful, enlightening and extremely moving.
Children have a way all their own.
Thanks for sharing this experience.

Brooke:
every time I think you've
written my favorite shelter
poem, you write yet another
one that blows me away--it's
almost 2 a.m. my time, however,
so I'm too beat to try to be
creative with a response--I just
know that children's smiles cure
a world of hurt. love, jan

Hi Brooke Congratulations of winning the 'naani' poem, so much better because it is true. You say never underetimate the power of a smile, also never underetimate the power of a child, I sometimes take my little dance pupils into local resthomes and hospices, the patients just love them and it's a wonderful experience for the children.LOL Gaye

Yes, dear Brooke, you have magic in your pen. These short but pithy pieces pack a gut-punch. How awesome to shake a reader in such a way!

Very touching and how very true. A smile can speak a thousand words and clear up in an instant all fears and sadness even for a breif time. The medicine of small gestures appreciated. Thank you for the reminder.

The power of a friendly smile can make one forget about their cares for a moment or two, this we both know is very true. But the smile of a youngster brings out the best in us all. We can be having the worst of days and if there is a baby or five year old, that little smile will calm the storm. An eleven year old amongst the poorest or poor and in a shelter, has to be as refreshing as the first winds of spring. This person who brought in his daughter may have touched more people than he knows and the eduction and self worth that this young person recieved will last a life time. The naani wasn't too bad either. mstad55

Thanks, Mike - I am so eager to show her a copy of the poem and tell her she made me win a contest! :-) Brooke

I'll bet she's proud of her mother, and thought that it would be better if you won without her getting injured, but if that's what it takes, I'm sure she's always glad to help.

The innocence of a child,,,drawing so misconceptions of the unfortunate, just accepting them as they are.

How wonderful that her dad would so wisely introduce her to the need to reach out to others and for her to offer such comfort with a simple smile. A lesson for many of us!

Thank you for sharing! Carol C
