Hi Brooke Very very clever poem. We are not great flag flyers here, which is a shame. I always feel flags should be flown for pride.

PS I am a bit behind in my reviewing, so many things going on in my life, which is great. Cheers Gaye

Hello Brooke,
I like your poem but (I'm confused?) do you mean strip flags by narrow flags of have flags all in line like in a big line .
You form is excellent and liked that you remembered Flag Day.

no, I mean hatred strips or removes the honor from a flag - people who wave the flag to be hatefully superior to someone else are not keeping the spirit of the flag that our soldiers died for :-) Thanks, Gert.

It is well written, but it took a couple of reads to get it. In fact I didn't even get it then until i read the authors notes, then read it again. My only critique would be that you shouldn't need the notes to 'get it.'

John, sorry you didn't get it - I just reread it and don't see why it would need the notes in order to be understood. What part was confusing? Thanks so much, Brooke :-)

I was hard to pinpoint the point of view. I couldn't tell whether you loved the flag or hated it. I am gratified to find, from your notes, that you do love it. Perhaps the problem was in my court. I have read so many 'hate America' pieces, that either try to apologize in the finest Obama style for America, or downright degrade what America has accomplished for the world that I really get sick around Memorial Day, Flag Day, etc. that I might have been reading your work wrong.

Every person has their own beliefs on flag day. Where I live many flags wave everyday; not only ours, but the flags of each individual who came from another country, wave their flags everyday. Personally, I wave the US flag, I was born and raised here (as where my parents), but my Grandparents came from other countries and those flags get waved as well out of respect for just that reason.
I think you made valid points; those who perished for our freedom, and the freedom of others, would be dishearented to see hatred written across the flag (any flag).
Great job!!! It's always nice to read your views (historical or not) for each day-for that reason alone, I believe you should be thanked over and over and over and over.......:)

An excellent poem with deep meaning. We don't always think about the other people, and what country the lived in, when patriotism strikes. I'm sure the people in the Solomon Islands felt very patriotic when they were liberated. It's strange, but while on a scuba diving trip there many people living there talk about WWII like it happened just yesterday.

Sally, thank you - yes, I am sure there are parts of this world who love Americans because of our brave soldiers long ago :-) Brooke

It's amazing how short-sighted some people can be. Fewer died at Utah Beach than Omaha, but it didn't matter if you were one of them who met their end. Great story, Brooke. You constantly amaze me. Ray.

What you have written is both profound and deeply moving. Those of us who still remember the names of those beaches where tens of thousands died must cry "amen" to your powerful message. A personal thanks to you for remembering Utah Beach to which I add Omaha and the Belgium Bulge where I lost one of my family. My hat is off to you for this perfectly timed and totally appropriate reminder. Sincere thanks. Nick

I also like to think of the flag as symbol of freedom for all, not just a few or this country only. Well written verse that says much about our flag and what it should mean to us,well done.
