And from the farthest recesses of our minds too.

Great job Brooke, and thank you for sharing such a tender set of memories in this delightful poem.

Hi Brooke Congratulations on winning contest. Your poem is beautiful. How sad that your mother died when you were only a child. You right, smell does bring back memories, whenever I smell lavender I recall my grandmother.
Cheers Gaye

I read the perameters for the minute poem and shook my head in dispair. And here you've not only done it with ease and finesse but with elegance and pognancy. So much of this reminds me of my mother, especially the fragrance of fresh baked "light bread" as we called it then, and the cinnamon fragrance that hung long in the drafty kitchen around her wood burning stove.. Ah see how you have moved me with your words. Small wonder then, that you have won. Congratulations and well done. Sincere appreciation, Nick

If I had any sixes this would have received one. This was so beyond excellent that words fail me. Totally awesome! A darned good piece of writing!

Another great poem for Brooke and another well deserved win. congratulations. When I saw your entry I almost didn't enter mine, but I wanted to say something a little different. So I did. Sorry I was away and didn't get to vote.

Marcus, thank you - in form contests there are so many directions people can go in as far as what they write about - I would certainly hope nobody ever stays out of a contest just because they've read something good already entered. 95% of what I post is not even in a contest. They're nice to win once in a while, but they're not what writing is about :-) Brooke

I don't know what Emeraud is, but you drew an evocative picture of your mother all the same.

Did you grow up without a Mom-figure in your home completely?

A great piece, Brooke.

Nescher, it is a perfume, still made by Coty, but far far more popular back in the 50's. I have a sister 19 years older, so she provided a Mom-figure of sorts but she was already married and pregnant when my mother died. My father remarried a couple years later, but she had to move to Arizona for a lung condition two years after that - I would visit her during summers and Christmas - but she died when I was 16. At that point I thought I killed mothers off! :-) Thanks, my friend. Brooke :-)

I flew again in last night's dream;
the image clean
blew air across
my head of dross.

I soared above the thoughts of me
as I flapped free
of cares unfair,
so debonair.

Then face met ground with sickly crunch
as sod I munched.
Reality
did get to me.

I can see why this is the contest winner. Your words bring to life the images of a warm and loving home with all the fragrances that mortals usually find pleasant. Excellent imagery, Brooke and a very fine read. Blessings, Linda
