Hello Pearly One,
Your poem is truly deserving of praise. I liked it very much. It poses an excellent question eloquently. Yes, indeed, where turns the mother with children to feed when the pantry is empty. My Mother used to tell me about times during her homesteading days childhood when this was almost the case... however Grandma had a wonderful ingenuity for making a meal out a few potatoes and a soup bone (no peanut butter around where they lived way back then.) You can be sure, if I had voted in the contest, my vote would have been for this amazing tetractys.
Hugs,
Whizpurr ^-^

Brooke,
I read this the other day. I thought I had reviewed it, but I guess I was wrong.

How profound!
I can't imagine the worry that mothers have - wondering how they will supply their child's next meal. It is very sad.

Your poem has such an inspiring question.
This emotional plea and your heartfelt author notes have touched me deeply.

Nic

Thank you, Nic. People assume the government takes care of everyone's needs, but the amounts that make people eligible and the amounts they then receive are based on antiquated formulas that rarely allow for the food to hold out all month long. And the most filling food is cheaper, starchy less nutritious stuff. We end up with obesity as a result of lack of funds, which seems contradictory but really isn't. Thanks, Nic. Brooke

This was a great tetracyts. How ironic that the wealthiest nation in the world cannot furnish food for the food pantries, and that private citizens such as you and your friends have to be the ones to keep them fully supplied. There should be a federal directory for food pantries and the people they serve to keep up with the demand. This would be some interesting legislature for the poor. Bail out the food pantries!!!!!!

The other day I heard the director of the central food pantry in Trenton speak. In addition to food, they do tutoring, job training, etc. Their budget is $1.8 million. They get $35,000 from the govt for the tutoring and a couple hundred thousand toward food - but a million and a half is raised from private donors to serve 3 hot meals 5 days a week. The director spends most of his time begging churches and civic groups and individuals for donations, often $20 at at time, and their expenses would be much higher if not for the 2500 volunteers. It's great that all those people help out, but yeah, there needs to be more institutional support. My little Center has to hold silent auctions and bake sales and send out begging letters just to stay open. I'm ranting. Thank you, Brooke :-)

One of the things that is heartbreaking about America, the richest nation on earth is its soup lines and homeless people. Very well written with good imagery and descriptive scheme.

Such a sad poem, Brooke. It is hard to look into the face of poverty; the real faces of it, the ones with the hungry people who are attached to them. It can overwhelm your heart. No matter how much you care, or how much you do - there will always be another hungry person who you cannot reach. Another sick one that you cannot heal. As much as it hurts, you must do what you can, and then close your eyes and be at peace. Even doctors and nurses know that when there is a catastrophe, they must triage and save those that they can and leave the others. It is devastating to the soul, but there is no other way. Blessings to you, dear Brooke for trying. Rose.

Rose, I know - that is what I tell myself each day - one has to focus on the few people one can reach and help and just hope and pray someone else will reach the others. Thank you, my dear friend. Brooke

This is heartbreaking - especially since it is reality for too many.

The artwork is adorable, and as per your author notes, so are many who require assistance these days. Your story is one that will stay with me.

Excellent.

And you know what this (and your notes) puts me in mind of? The people in the US who say welfare is evil/unmanning (yes I've seen that word used) makes people dependent, etc etc, and "let charity do the work". Hel-LO, charities are overloaded NOW, how the hell are they supposed to support people if the state doesn't step in to help? Sickeningly inhumane view, I say. Like you said before, the dark side of the American fixation on individual freedom or effort. We've got it here to some extent but not nearly as badly, because our society is so different in its origins - not the fact of it being a penal colony, but the fact of it being a Government sponsored colony all along. We expect 'em to do something for the money they get, lol.

Excellent poem, Brooke.

Excellent poem. It must be difficult to look those people in the eye and tell them you ran out of food. You are right that "Boo" is no different than any other child and deserves to eat. Good luck in the contest.

We never run out of food at our Center, just the nutritious food like fruit and eggs - we have plenty of pastries and bread donated by local bakeries and stores. It's just that while one can get full on chocolate iced brownies, it isn't much of a healthy start! :-) Thanks, Brooke :-)
