This was quite humorous. I enjoyed the illogical logic your parents used when raising you. I must say, I am surprised you didn't end up 15 and pregnant. I remember some of my friends who had very strict parents were the ones that got into the most trouble.

Thanks for a fun read:)

Thank you for taking the time to read my story. Yes, it is a wonder that I never needed therapy.

I enjoyed this account of your strict upbringing...but it sure provides a lot of laughs now, I'm sure.

Good luck in the contest.

I would usually suggest spelling TV in full in formal writing but for this piece, I'm reading it as if you're sitting in front of me speaking directly so I left it.

nothing more than sterile kissing (no tongue involved).
I had the same experience with my dad who was a single parent bringing up 2 daughters. In his case, he kept clearing his throat until we took the hint to change channel.

all she replied is that I was becoming a young lady and that I could get pregnant.
I laughed, I wonder who taught biology to your mum or she just created that story to frighten you off.

They finally let go and focused their attention on my sister, ten years younger than me and so innocent - poor child.
I guess they thought now you were perfect, they could move on with their next project.

This is really a good story. It's touching, it feels honest, rebellious, justified in questioning their sanity, and its so very human. And the way you tell it reminds me of a fable, like Hansel and Gretal questioning what the witch is telling them, and then proving her wrong - except you're not escaping with your life, of course. And then again, maybe you are.

Very well done.

Regards, anabelle

This was laugh-out-loud funny. My parents would not talk about kissing dating or sex and told me to NEVER be alone with a boy no matter what they said or offered...lol. Boy did I grow up messed up.. I had to learn from books and TV - YIKES! I think I may be okay now at 44 but the grips of a mid-life are pulling me back...lol.

Well done!

lol This is a great story of growing up, despite all parental efforts! I remember it well, although at least my parents didn't espouse the notion that oceans were full of sperm! It flows well, with gentle humour. Good luck with the contest. :)

Are parents funny? They do some strange things, with the best of intentions. A lovely and funny story, which I could relate to easily. A pleasure to read.

Poor dear - you could have gotten pregnant by swimming in the ocean, shaking hands at a party, watching a love scene on the television - I'm surprised you don't have a dozen illegitimate kids!! LOL This is a most funny personal essay in the Switch contest - you did the poets on site proud in the competition. Great detail and examples, great humor. I am SO glad my father was only normal-level protective - though this makes for a great funny story all these years later. LOL Brooke

Thank you, Brooke, for the encouraging review. Some parts of my story were exaggerated just to get across the idea that some parents do go to extremes to raise their children properly. That's why I placed the note at the beginning that it was a mix of fiction and non-fiction.

I belive that a writer is not a writer until he or she is willing to expose his or her family life and you did it. I can relate. I wonder if freedom to be oneself gets easier with each generation.
