The dogwoods here are just finishing with a final flourish. The pink ones are all gone, but we have a lone white that is at the peak of bloom right now. They are beautiful trees for sure.

Great job, Brooke! But you will have to die in April, so we are safe from losing you for a while yet :)

Exquisite! This poem is exceptionally beautiful. We both love daisies and dogwoods! ;)

Beneath a gnarled dogwood tree,
pink petals on the ground,
is but one place I'd like to have
my ashes scattered round. <-- This stanza gave me chills.

Your wording is so descriptive and paints a picture in my mind.

While building our home (in the woods), I was very careful to mark the trees that were not to be disturbed while clearing a site for our house. We have many dogwoods on our land and I didn't want a single one to be pushed down.

I was pleased that in the area where we chose to place the house, only Georgia pines would be sacrificed. (Ok, I'm prejudiced. Georgia pines, to me, are one of the least beautiful trees. They look like tall trunks with pine needles on the top quarter.) We didn't have to push down any of the stately hardwoods or dogwoods.

The dogwoods on my property are all white, but my grandmother had a pink dogwood beside her front porch. It had the most beautiful blooms - much like those pictured in your poem.

The dogwoods are just beginning to bloom here, Brooke. You'd love the site from my back deck! ;)
(Sorry - I'm long-winded tonight. LOL)

Nic, I normally don't like pink - baby blanket pink, but I love the rose pink of dogwoods - thank you for your lovely descriptions and I am sure I would adore your view. Thank you, Brooke

Beautiful way of thinking about death. I too would like a celebration not allot of sadness and especially not buried in a box. This is a lovely way to give your wishes when taking your last breath.

This is lovely and, for me, quite poignant. My mother's ashes were buried beneath the branches of her favorite flowering cherry tree just a few months ago.

So I understand the sentiment all too well. I agree, too.

"places where
my life you celebrate" - the best places for rememberance.

Excellent, indeed.

This was absolutely outstanding. I love the sentiment, that you want your loved ones to remember your ife instead of mourning your death. Beautifully crafted, with great rhymes, wonderful rythmn and flow, perfect form. Thank you so much for sharing this amazing poem.

Well, it's an interesting idea. Should we have our ashes scattered around to all those places we've cherished? I'm not sure. I saw how much my dad grieved whenever he returned to a place that he had shared with my mom. I don't know how he would feel, thinking that a part of her was forever there....

It is a matter of perception and beliefs. You're thinking that it will help the grieving move on...

You sure have a talent for writing these poems! I am amazed.

Terry, this is such a personal decision - I would never dream to prescribe my choice for others. I know it is how my own family feels from when my ex-husband died four years ago. Thanks so much, Brooke

If I toss them into the endless sea or even into the breeze, I will have to end up putting theses words to an old song..."gotta wash that woman right out of my hair." Beautiful piece again..so what's new?

This series of reflective quatrains gave fine form to the beautiful sentiment delivered within their stanzas.
I am reminded of another poem that encourages the grieving to celebrate the loved one's life lived rather than mourn their passing.
Thanks for the read, Brooke!

This is such an amazingly positive view on dying. You create a feeling that it really is not the end of things. My favorite line is the very last one, My life you celebrate. I hope when it's my time, my family and friends do just that. Great work.
