This is a fun poem, Brooke. I like the lilting feel and the witty message. I've never heard of a Fastnacht, but I'd be willing to try almost anything with sugar on it! haha

Your author notes are fabulous. I often feel like I've been schooled after reading your works. That's a good thing! Great writing.

Nic, I guarantee they are sinfully good - you might get ill if you ate more than two, but yeah, good stuff! LOL Thanks, Brooke :-)

Is that what you call a "fat lard b-tt? I liked your poems. Your poems are very unique. I really enjoy them. I should think that you would win every sort of contest that you enter. Your poems are fantastic.

This is a wonderfully educational poem that reads effortlessly, my dear. I've got a bad case of the flu but can't sleep another hour so I have to confess the poem did not make me hungry. However, if I weren't feeling this way, just the word donut makes me salivate. Have you ever had one of these Fastnacht goodies? I say anything fried and coated with sugar is probably good.
Only you could make the word 'lard' sound poetic.
I love this stanza:
They're not the least bit healthy --
that's not the point, you see.
Today is for indulgence,
not Lenten chastity.
Amen to that!
Very well explained and well designed.
Hugs, Brooke. Another great one.

I have not cooked one since I can't cook to save my life and I would not want to ruin the wonderful things - but I have eaten them! Yum!!! Sorry about your flu - get better!!! Hugs to you, too,
    Brooke

Loyd, yes, lots of people were dashing to their pantries or local bakeries, at least, after this one - I don't know if I had fans, but doughnuts sure did. LOL Thanks, Brooke :-)

The season is upon us once again. The rhyme and meter in this poem is fun and easily read out loud. I am amazed by the variety of subjects people find to write about. I can learn a lot from people like you.

I see this more of biographical poetry and no doubt that also has ties to Jewish roots as well. Before Passover, they have a double check and us the time to clean and re-Kosher their kitchens. To me it is human nature, to induldge before you are supposed to abstain. Eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow, we die!

I have a catholic calendar and though I missed the start as my days run together, I plan to follow it this year as best that I can. I love the notes and very often for both ideas and a way to incorporate their particular beliefs, people combine from a variety of sources, to reinforce what they want to get across.

To me Lent is also a contradiction, the letter verses the spirit of the law. Lent was a tough time and I believe it is best used to remember the history behind it. The verse to everything their is a season is very multi-dimensional. Whether to give up my cigarettes or poetry is what people want to know. Poetry is my cigarette for the deep down inside of my being. If I give anything up, it is for practical reasons. We not only have to live, but rather enjoy and I believe that this pleases God!

I loved this poem and plan to rest on it. Much enjoyable. You never know what lines of thoughts a poem will draw. That is why I love it!

Fascinating poem! That is why I love it here. My favorite bibical character is the person in Genisis who is known to walk with God. I tend tho get this world all figured out and it is as if He grabs me by the nape of the neck and says, "Oh yea! Have another look!" Much the fool like the Native American's Oldman Coyote, but I love the challange and try to relate that to as many people that can tolerate me. Now, that is like a Mark Twain statement! LOL

I better retire! Take care. You and your poetry are much appreciated. I plan to finally fix up my space and include a little blurb on my favorite poets. Eventually I would like to highlight and link your works. Much enjoyment from them has come my way!

    With love, Mike

Smile, let's go and celebrate at least with a donut! I like the joy theme of your poem, and very up to date also.
Have a joyful Fastnacht Day!

Brooke, lard is great. I want butter, not fake butter, sugar, not fake sugar. I want beef in the burger, not veggie burgers and I want steak instead of broccoli. If it is bad for you I want it. lol

Those days begin tomorrow.
Exactly, I like the humor here
every now and then we just have to say...
Go for it!
I don't think anything could be more sinful than Mardi Gras Brooke. Yummy!!!

We'll empty out the pantry
of things we must discard

When I was young, we always gave up candy. It was a supreme sacrifice, even though we seldom had candy, even on a good day. For some reason, I have continued the tradition. My husband, however, came home yesterday with a bag of rich, deep chocolate. It will be interesting to see if I can resist.

Your poem reminds me of the sacrifices that we all make, everyday. Some of us live lives of sacrifice, while some revel in luxury. Makes you think.

Terry, one year I gave up my favorite - ketchup, which ruined so many other foods for me as I poured it on almost everything! LOL Thanks so much for sharing with me and for your great review, Brooke :-)
