I do think the whole concept of rules to war slightly silly, and impossible to enforce. Who decides who has the right to decide them? I remember an old Star Trek episode where two nations have been at war for centuries, and they calculate losses each day, then march that number of their own citizens into incinerators.
War sanitised to the point of science fiction.
I'm not saying war should be horrible and widespread; quite the opposite, it should not be in the first place.
I often wonder how our leaders would have reacted if (purely for the sake of argument) China had declared that out war on Iraq was illegal, and invaded us...
It's like a whole planet of children each declaring that they are right, and the others have to do as they say, but none actually in enough of a position of power...
Argh, I'm off on a thought journey again. Once again though, thanks to your words Brooke. I don't have any answers, but then neither it seems does anyone else. I guess we'll all just keep trying :-/

Your thoughts are all quite profound - and yes, who decides? It seems we should have some basic things to agree on, however, like not using children under a certain age as impressed soldiers, not raping anyone. Certainly a few niceties can be the basis for some agreement, and yet none of these niceties is observed. Thank you for a most provocative review, Brooke

Well stated on every count. A war between nations does not mean the civilization should become uncivilized. The war and devastation are enough, but whose to stop it. The actions are not justified because it's war. If we go to war to punish a nation that treats it's country men less than animals, and we are trying to stop it, well I don't think we need to act like our attackers. A very thought provoking piece as well as are the notes. mstad55

You have said it all in thirteen words. Concise and powerful. The fact that warfare is so often used a an excuse to commit unspeakable attrocities, is all one needs to know about this species of ours. Great job. Bill

this is about a powerful apoem that you'll ever write with such few words
The message here must be stinging to those who have anything to do with war or the promotion there of
well executed line and words

Steve, thank you again - you're a great dad, a wonderful husband, and you like my poetry - hey, if you need my nomination for an award, I'll write it! :-D Brooke

Wow! Thank you so much, Brooke. That is certainly a fine endorsement.
As far as a wonderful husband goes, I'm far from that and should probably take lessons on improvement.
I do like to think of myself as a good dad though. I won't fight you on that one. Thanks so much for your kind review and continuing support. I really need that right now at this point in my life
take care
steve

The sketch you picked to accompany was striking. I am amazed how you could take so few words and convey such a feeling of pain. Excellent job. Your author notes are so very true.

Only God can comfort enough to ease the pain. I am awed by the image as it depicts the agony of war. Thanks for sharing this 'conscience hitter' with us.

I love the question at the end it is the same thing I want to know. Sometimes I feel people's lives are held with so much disregard. Nice poem.
Much love,
