Hello dewpearl.
Just got to this, I think you know PC issues. This is exceptional with such multi level weaving. The depth and breadth of this work would require an essay to adequately critique. Your author notes raised some heavy duty philosophical issues as well. LOL Sometimes you write such wonderfully thought provoking stuff that I get quite exhausted. (Thats a compliment). fondly, rebecca

this was an amazing piece! i am interested in writing a-z poetry, but i need to know if there is any specific rythm to it or is it just basically two or so words per line with a hidden rythm and consistancy?i noticed that your poetry rolls off the tongue and is easy to read, but i was wondering about the rules of the trade. Can you fill me in?

Brandon, if there are rules, I don't know any of them. As in all poetry I write, I try to make it flow as I read it aloud.
But if there is some rule book somewhere about this form, I am totally unaware of it. And when anyone sponsors a contest, they make up whatever rules they want, but this poem is just for me, no contest. I find so many poetry rules silly and constraining. If I were you, I'd make anything you write sound beautiful or powerful or whatever mood you are going for, and always have some flow or cadence. Thanks for your review, Brooke

Blimey, Brooke. The way you manage to spiral this is amazing. I was floating along through the first passage, not knowing there was a second. When it came to the end of part one, I'm thinking, 'What about the rest?' Then it comes, hurtling down the page. Fantastic use of rhythm. Heartbeating stuff.

Don't know how you manage these, Brooke. I really wouldn't know where to start.

'Violence, weeping.' - so evocotive. Poor kid.

Another creative joy, my friend.

Speak to you soon,

Ian

I remember reading The Lord of The Flies in school. I hated the story, as the boys reminded me of some of the tougher kids at our school, and I went to one of the city's toughest. for me at was very believable, and I would have been Porky. No matter, all is well, for we do have to be civilized (at least to a moderate extent.) I loved your romp into paradise with the boys, and how your poem moved to chaos in the second part. It encapsulates the book excellently.

this is a book many people can identify with as many of us have been treated badly by others and believe we would have been on the bad end of things too! Thank you, Brooke

This A-Z description of Golding's novel was nicely done. The novel does show the breakdown in social order, but it also shows the elements of good vs. evil even in the young. The "Lord" of the Flies has often been used as symbolic Satan. Simon, one of the young boys who is murdered, has a religious (martyrdom) element to the sacrifice. Piggy, the intellectual, also is murdered.

Yes, the symbolism in this book is rich, and it offers us a view of all sides of human nature, which makes it such a great piece of literature. Thank you so much, Brooke

I liked the complexity of this poem and its symbolism. It was very vivid and descriptive. It also had a nice flow and rhythm to it.

Golding's work (which I know only in summary; it's not a book I have any wish to read) could almost be said to take the laissez-faire "no government" thinking to its ultimate conclusion, couldn't it? I agree with him; humans without any sort of social cohesion are distinctly unpleasant animals. In fact, herd animals have their own rules and pecking order, and breaking those lands the perpertrator in trouble. That includes generally unaggressive herbivores. Look at the work Monty Roberts has done in studying the dynamics of wild horses: they have a strong social unit in the herd, and troublemakers can be punished by ostracisation, enforced by the lead mare, which in the wild could mean a death sentence. All of which is to say that the ideals of Rousseau don't have much knowledge of the natural world to back them up! In any case, human aggression isn't something created by the complications or inequities of society. We've been doing each other in for a very long time, doubtless before we were even recognisable as homo sapiens (and what a daft designation that name often seems, lol).

Oh yeah, I was meant to be talking about the poem ... :P

I like the contrast of the classic South Sea Island fantasy, almost like something those wretches from the Bounty had in their heads, with the second half, which could as easily be something out of Clockwork Orange.

Ta for posting!

Louise :))

HI Pearly One,
What a clever and precise method you have choosen to convey a great story. You are right, it is complex, and yet though this a-z means you touch on the deeper meanings in a talented and apt manner. It took me awhile to get on to this a-z manner of writing but now that I've finally caught it, I am honestly amazed. Thanks to your inspiration, I might even have a go at one for fun.
Happy holidays and richest blessings, Whizpurr ^-^

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, view and concept of this. I have not read the book but I did see the movie once, and found it so disturbing, and yet understandable. I enjoyed your notes given and can comprehend why we need to have certain basic rules to guide and direct us. Without them chaos fell amongst the boys and then they instigated rules to gain control, only they were just as demeaning and degrading than if each just respected each other and treated others as they would have wanted to be treated. Instead they took on the ways of power, control, manipulation and eventually destruction.
Thanks again for sharing and many blessings to you

a great piece of writing that so well summarizes a great story. For those who have not read lord of the flies, may this be a sort of cliff notes. May this writing make people realize why we live with laws and rules.
