You're so right!
When my kids were first assigned this book I read it, as I have many other American classics, and had a much different take on Hester than my children - much more in line with yours.
However the English teacher at my daughter's school was of the same opinion though, so they heard her presented this way.

so much depends on what the teacher thinks - so many present only their own interpretation as if it's the only one available thank you, Brooke

Believe it or not, I've never read The Scarlet Letter. And now, thanx to your "REader's Digest" condensation, I know exactly what happens without reading it still. No suggestions or corrections. Love the alliteration throughout, "Woman X-alted" is fave. Scarlet presentation is perfection! Kudos! later and God bless, shy

Brooke, another well written piece you have introduced to A-Z Land. You have done a beautiful job with your description of Hester and her journey. Very vivid, easy read. You have carried me back to hs and I remember my admiration of Hester as she refuses to allow her past to rule her. k

What strength of character your subject must have had. You have put together a strong piece of writing. It was directed well and each word shouted out a message. I enjoyed it very much.

Good morning, Brooke, You portrayed as much emotion in your poem as the book and the movie. Your descriptive words brought out the story in full. Great job! Judy

Great presentation and wonderful flow to the words. They gave a feeling of the witch trials. Appreciate the authors notes as well and the reminder of Hawthorn's Scarlet Letter. enjoyed. ann

Thank you for your notes giving description to the poem you have compiled. After reading the notes, the poem made so much sense and the words used described well, the life of a woman treated with scorn for her sin and the transformation that took place. She sounds like an amazing woman and one that many of us could take lessons from, to stand against adversity and ridicule, judgment, condemnation and criticism. For me, in the end she was exonerated by God who is the witness of all, and judgment fell on the one to whom it should have been in the first place, considering he stood at the realm as God's representation and head. This reminds me of the adulterous woman in the bible that came before Jesus. Not a stone was cast at her for none was without sin. Mind you, in this case, she was 'stoned' with words and actions but in the end she too was exonerated. Thank you for sharing this and the history lesson given also. I enjoyed it and for me, would have loved to have read more about this courageous woman, who from sinner began, redeemer she became, a blessing to all she met. Many blessings to you

Yes, she was stoned with words - and still she withstood them - that is true courage - thank you for recognizing that in my poem, Brooke

This is a most difficult form of poetry and you have appeared to master it.
BTW, don't forget about Roger and revenge. That was a big part of the story, too.
I hope this helps and good luck.

oh, yes, I know - I can never get the entirety of a story into one of these poems- I choose a focus. But he is not forgotten! Thanks, Brooke

You have given me flashes of Demi Moore in her prime, Mmmmmmm, The Scarlet letter, a great movie, emotional story and you have offered up another fine piece of work that compliments the power of Hester. Thank you for Demi!

Thanks for your kind reply - I never watched the movie as the critics totally trashed her. So, you think she was good? I have no opinion on the matter. Brooke

omg I just bought a new copy of this book at the half price book store, I read my other one to shreds. This is a wonderful adaptation of this story. It is clever enough to be a synopsis. Great job brooke!

Oh, if you ever get time my favorite book of all time is Farenheit 451. I have a 1968 signed copy by Ray Bradbury. Not that you need any suggestions, but it is such a wonderful read :
