Hah, awesome poem, with a rather appropriate picture. I remember how cool those cakes were when I was a kid (my mom never had the skills to bake em though). Good work!

Hey Brooke ... well, they say you eat with your eyes! All these confections sound absolutely mouth watering. I'm a big fan of 'fairy cakes' which my mum used to make. I would sit by her hoping to lick the bowl of the mix after she'd filled the cups. Lovely!

I don't even remember what these tasted like - my memory doesn't include slicing into them! LOL Thanks, Brooke :-)

Hi Pearl! This is just beautiful.
So very expressive and sweet ,just
as the flow of the words along with
the meter and choice of words with
perfect rhyme.
It is surely an iced upon cupcake..
all with sweet n sugary taste.
Thanks for sharing!

I love your walks through memory lane, Brooke, they are real treasures, and you write them with so much love. This is what counts in a poem, when it reaches the heart of the reader. I remember those cakes, but my mother hardly went into the kitchen, so she bought them! Big difference!LOL.

I read through 3 times looking for hidden meaning, but couldn't find any, well not that I could see. I am not saying there should have been, it's nice to see a piece that is was it is.

I used to bake with my Mum so it took me back a few years.

5 stars well earnt.

yeah, no hidden meaning, unless you mean that subtle allusion to the current election wherein I subliminally worked through my words to get you to vote Democratic... LOL Thanks, Brooke :-)

Yeah, i'm English so no vote for me. I am however hoping the Mcanne wins as Barak or however he spells his name, hates the English and will leave us high and dry. Anyway who are we to talk with the idiot Brown in charge.

I'll be posting in the next hour or so , if you have time to take a look.

    Cheers

I was unaware of Obama's attitudes toward the English - I like the English myself :-) I will be on the lookout for your post :-) Brooke

Brooke, I didn't get to grow up that way. We were so poor (family of an enlisted man in the USMC, but that's another story) that peanut butter cookies were the best we got of the cookie and cake world unless we were in KY at Gran's.

Great post!

My dad was a steamfitter/foreman at a time there was a construction boon - we didn't live the life of the rich, but life was always comfortable. Overtime was our family's favorite word - that and Union. LOL Thanks so much for your lovely review :-) Brooke

    miss jello mold LOL

so, which was your favorite - banana slices in cherry jello or grated carrots and pineapple pieces in orange or green jello? Every mother in America specialized in jello!! LOL

Very well done! This did indeed bring back a lot of childhood memories for me too. My mother never did "cut up" cakes but she was always willing to try new recipes for neat cookies and cakes for the kids. It was great fun watching the creations come to be. Your poetry brings out a lot of feelings. Well written! Good job!

I remember those so very well, with the licorice antennae. Wasn't there a cat, too. My mother used to make these for us. Two summers ago I got a box of cookbooks at an auction and there was one of them in there. What wonderful memories you have created. I'm glad you could get one for your daughter. Blessings, Laura

Thanks for sharing this and thanks for tweaking the taste buds. This made me so hungry for cakes and a cuppa. lol.
I would have loved to have had a booklet like this, it would have been well used by now.
I enjoyed the imagery your words painted of the memories you hold of your mum in her den of delicious baking wares, and the wonderful creations that would develop. What a wonderful blessed memory to have.
This was well worded and well expressed and has one almost wishing that words could be eaten. yum yum. lol.
I really like the sound of "Baker's Sweetened Angel Flake Coconut", a recipe definitely worth getting.
Thanks again a many blessings to you
