adewpearl, as always you manage to shine in each and every work you do. I had to check this out. Funny we used the same picture. Actually there was not much to choose from in the candy department for art..lol..I tried to go on line and found some really good pictures but they were to big to download. I forgot about candy necklaces..goodness..
this is really a great poem..I am jealous..jlsavell

Wow, you sure brought back some memories with this one, Brooke!! The penny candy counter was like going to heaven when I was a kid. I'd bring my little brown bag home and hide it from my brother and sister. lol Wonderful poem.

At my local newsagent (well, I say newsagent, but to me and my friends it was the "sweet shop") when I was little (early 80s I guess!) they used to do half-penny sweets; they were tiny, but a good use for those half-p coins that disappeared soon after! The days of the "10p mix", I fear, are over :-(

I love it that children in other countries had very similar experiences to mine even if some of the names of candies or places or coins were a bit different - thanks for your review :-)

Hi Brooke, this is you in familiar nostalgia mode. I'm not permitted to eat sugar these days but I sure remember those candies from my childhood too, sitting in large glass jars in the sweetshop window. You take the reader back to those uncomplicated, innocent days, when all of life was sweet. Oh no, there was the problem of choice! Thanks, Peter.

thanks, Peter - I am really enjoying reviews from people who grew up in England, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Germany - who all had their own sweet treat memories so far away - nice to know it's a small world :-)

Hullo Adewpearl ....

What you have written here certainly conjures up happy memories for me. You write about a penny and yet you are in America. How often I have spoken of my young days - in the thirties - when a penny would buy a lovely big Cone-Ice-Cream and a tickey - which was 3-pence, bought
a Wafer Ice-Cream or a Chocolate Pie, as they were called.
Of course, I was born into the depression years and such
treats were very rare indeed. At the Portuguese Market-Garden Shop, Mom used to buy a penny's worth of soup-greens with which to make a good, healthy and wholesome soup for the family.
From a writing point of view, I have read this according to your own declared style and I thank you for sharing it with us.
With love from ..... Nanette Mary.

Brooks, I don't know how I missed this poem. On Sundays after church, we would go to my grandma's houses. My aunt and godmother lived with grandma g and would give us 3 kids a nickel each. Boy, did that bring in a haul.

You bring so many great memories back with you poetry. Thank you so much........jim

hi
great picture and poem
I, too, share your wonderful memories of the penny candy.
It was the hardest decision and took lots of thought when
it came to choosing which candy to buy. Great memories of
a wonderful time.
In my portfolio is a poem titled Happy Memories which recalls my life in Brooklyn, New York in the fifties. You
are welcome to take a look and comment if you wish.
good job

I remember a place when I was growing up where we would buy candy and soda and other stuff for a quarter or so. This was in the 70's though, but your poem brought back some memories of what it was like back then. A great poem of good memories. I also remember the candies you listed in your poem, some of them you cannot find anymore. Those were the good ole days.

You certainly brought back the memories with this one. For me, it was a quarter at the nearby Dillons store. I would come home with a whole sack of treats. Kits were my favorite then. And my house was a favorite place for the other kids because they knew where the candy would be.

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful childhood memories and the wondrous array of candies that could be bought for such a minimal cost, that would enchant and captivate children for hours of luxurious tidbits.
In NZ our pennies went out long before I was born, (1960s) but we had the one cent piece, which also went further than you would imagine. Today we have nothing under 10 cents, which is silly really considering prices still refer to their existence, e.g. 29.95, 12.23 or even 105.11. We cannot get change from these amounts for it must be rounded to the nearest 10 cent, and yet if it is by eftpos or credit card, the amount is taken exactly.
Amazing to me really how the economy and businesses can explain it away and yet it still doesn't change the fact that those smaller amounts, no longer exist, but we are still charged using them.
Oh well apart from all that, it won't be long before money itself becomes obsolete and everyone is forced to carry some form of card of chip instead. Now that is going to be really interesting to see.
Thanks for the wonderful and memorable journey your words took me on and many blessings to you

that is positively weird with your money situation, and I thought all bizarre bureaucratic snafus were the sole province of the U.S.!!!!! Thanks so much for your kind review
