Wow, a lovely review! Easy to read and interesting, I especially like the obvious empathy you have felt with his earlier struggles, especially those relating to getting published. Clearly reading this has had an effect on you! Best of luck in the contest, Lisa xx

I have read some of this and yes you are correct. This is something all wantabe writers might want to read. Writing for publication is not easy and Stephen King himself shows you that.
Well written and very informative. Good luck in the contest.

I love Steven King and love the way he puts his stories across. I think his later stuff is very very dark and don't enjoy them as much as his earlier writes. Best of luck in the contest.

Thanks so much for your kind review and encouragement. I agree, I like his earlier stuff much better, too.

I'm sold! This is a thorough, excellent review of what sounds like an excellent book. Although it seems unlikely, there may be some in this world who do NOT know that King writes horror novels. Perhaps that would be worth mentioning. Good luck in the contest

Barb, thanks four your kind review. You make a good point about mentioning that he writes horror stories and I will edit, accordingly. Bill

As an avid Stephen King fan, I just had to read your piece when I saw the title.
It has been many years since I read "On Writing", but I now have the desire to go pull it from my bookshelf and have another look. You have beautifully summarized the book in a straight-forward and unbiased way.
I must disagree, however, with your statement that King is an "underrated" writer. I think he has more than successfully earned his place in writing culture, and with works such as the Dark Tower series, has long since overthrown his early labels as nothing more than a common horror-writer. I feel he is now very well respected after decades of proving everyone wrong about his perceived "limited" writing ability.

Thanks for the kind review and the comments. I agree with what you a saying, I was just thinking in terms of the fact that he is undoubtedly one of the most talented storytellers of my generation, yet I don't think he has attained the same literary stature of such contemporaries as: Vonnegut, Uris, Capote, Mailer, et al.
Thanks again.

Hm... you di a very good job of telling us what to expect fromteh book without giving away juicy details. This line stood out for me in this repsect: He has a simple credo on writing, which he frequently reiterates for emphasis.
Very nicely done.

Thanks for the kind review. Yes, his credo is a key part of the theme of the book, so I thought it best for the reader to hear it first, while reading the book.

Okay, you sold me. I want to order the book online right now. I'm a big King fan, but I haven't read this particular book, but now I'm going to. The only mistake I found is "work to perspective publishers" should be "work to prospective publishers."

Thanks for the kind review. As a King fan, I am sure you will enjoy this book as much as I did. Thanks so much for catching my terrible blunder. I don't know how I did that, but I am going to correct it immediately.

Very well written review of Mr. King's book "On Writing." Though I am not a fan of his horror fiction, you have given me reason to look into this "Memoir/Manual." Well done, he owes you a commission! DBL

I'm actually planning on buying this book, so glad I came across your review. Your review is helpful even if a bit short (the book itself doesn't look too big), but you seemed to cover the most useful info without going from chapter to chapter. I will definitely buy this book now!
I read his book Blaze recently (of course I've read all his early work) and he mentioned he almost threw this book out when he came across it years later! It was one of his first stories and is a wonderful, character strong story. Not a horror story. So glad he didn't trash it!

Thanks for the kind review. I'm glad you mentioned Blaze, because I have not read it and I like his non-horror stories most.
