What a lovely tribute to your father, and what a relief from the many stories we read here about abusive fathers. Yours was a real winner. I really enjoyed reading this.

Diane,

This is an exceptional tribute, well worthy of a six-star review. It is exquisitely well written, and it affected me emotionally.

The train ride was, of course, a pipe dream, but of such dreams is life made.

I have one quibble: "I learned more about American history and literature from this humble and gentle man than I ever did from well-intentioned Dominican nuns or Franciscan priests as we traveled in books or by car to places like Gettysburg, Tarrytown, Monticello, and Salem." This sentence is a bit too long and could be shortened or broken into two sentences.

BTW, as you may well know, Carter's Little Liver Pills got raked over the coals by the FDA. First they had to drop the word "Liver," then they had to quit selling them.

Such a loving tribute to your Daddy! Maybe you didn't get that actual train ride...But you got the ride of your life, hands down! The teachings, the experience of a Dad being there. That is a blessing in itself!
Thanks for sharing!

This was a nicely written piece .

Intruiging plot.

There were no mechanical errors to help correct.

Sincerely, Kristen

Emotional, appealing, and nostalgic. Your story and writing pulled me and brought back many of my childhood memories. All promises were not fulfilled, but enough to make a full life. It makes you take a step back and reflect on the goodness of special relationships and whispered promises.

I couldn't find anything to correct or amend.

You was well blessed. I lost my father when I was six. Killed in a hunting accident. Then my mother remarried and I found another wonderful dad. He battled seven different kinds of cancer and none of them took him. The doctor wrote on his death certificate, "Tired, went home to Heaven." He was in the middle of fighting his 8th cancer. We was all there. He recongized all of us. And told us he was ready and went to sleep

"together we fished for bullheads...." I'd break that too long sentence up. Should you join "no mother, no sisters with commas after the colon? This is just nit picking. This is a beautiful memoir in which the reader comes to know the narrator and the father. The beautiful relationship between these two people is very moving. Mary Ann

Hello Mary Ann. So pleased you stopped by. Thank you for your kiind review. Regarding your suggstions, I just love to experiment with standard prose - not so much with poetry, but with prose. And I would also have to say that I often write prose in s poetic format. I also write for my offerings to be read aloud. So what oftentimes might appear long-winded, really isn't - if read aloud, that is. Take Care. diane.
