May the soul of your dear father rest in peace.

It was a pleasure and a privilege to read your loving account of your relationship with him on this Father's Day.

It brought back memories of my last conversation with my dad before he passed on at 94 years young. It was a complicated relationship. But I was his first child. As he lay with his head on my shoulder he asked me how he'd done. I told him he'd done his best and I couldn't have had a better father.

Blessings Julia

    Hello Julia!
So very pleased my offering resonated with you.
I truly believe most parents do the best they can...with the tools they are given.
I was blessed to have been graced with both of my parents...
    Thank you!

I'm so sorry you lost your father. Some train rides were meant to be dreams. It sounds like you had all of the important things. That's so much better than a train ride.

This is a terrific story, Diane :) Perfectly timed for Fathers Day. Congratulations on winning the contest way back in 2008. I didn't realize you have been a site member that long ago? I find Father's Day to be a lonely day since my dad passed away in 2013 just a week before Father's Day and a few weeks after his 90th birthday. Heavy sih...

    Hello Joy!
Thank you ever so much for your exceptional rating and thoughtful review.
Yes, I joined FanStory in 2007, but there was a gap of about six or seven years - when my folks were declining and my teaching responsibilities increased - that I only contributed sporadically.
I know what you mean about Father's Day being a "lonely day." I miss my father everyday. He was an exceptional man and my best friend...
    Thank you again!

How wonderful to be as close as you were/are to your dad, my wife had that relationship with her dad. They would whisper something to each other that no one else could hear, and it was easy to feel left out. I felt a little in the cold, she was there at his final journey. And she has that sort of relationship with two of our grandsons, Dr. Hobson the Christian psychologist, said that a girl gets her self esteem from her dad, I guess just like our Heavenly dad. Well done, easy to have a tear after reading this honouring and touching tribute, I know what he meant, that must bring comfort Diane. Well done, blessings, Roy

You brought a tear to my eye Diane, the bond you had with your father here is something I never had with my own father and your special connection is well told in your story. There is never enough time to spend with that special someone when there is so much to do in life, but you have some wonderful memories in your heart and you shared them with us here, a fine write and worthy winner of the contest, a joy to read, love Dolly x

What a lovely tribute to your father, Diane. I'm so glad that you republished it. It makes me think of my father on this Father's Day. I can't say that we were as close as you and your dad, but I did love him so. Yours
was as tremendously special relationship.
Thank you for sharing this bit of your life.

Mrs KT, thank you so much for suggestion that I read this insight into your life. To be honest, I read it a few days ago but could not bring myself to respond in review. The emotions of my dad's passing are still raw. Needless to say I cried after reading this beautiful story...as I have tears in my eyes right now. Thank you ~DD

Of course you won the contest with this splendid tribute to your father, and I'd have given it a Six if I still had one. (I'm a rail-fan myself, especially steam engines, as each one seems to have (or have had) its own personality. Also, "Abou Ben Adhem" is one of the classic poems I included in my literary art book.) Though you never took that train ride, you had a lot of good times with him -- fond memories to cherish for the rest of your life. Superb, and aptly illustrated.

This is a very touching story. Thanks for sharing! It reminded me of the important things in life, the things we sometimes take for granted, and the inevitable pain of losing one we love.
