Mike,

Is it possible that if one stops writing (or painting, or reading or playing the gee-tar or dancin' or singin', etc. etc. etc.) that life stops altogether?

I had problems in my twenties with parents, family members, neighbors & friends telling me I couldn't publish unless it was worth some money.

They were wrong.

They all told me I would never be published (in print and on paper) for years and years.

They were wrong.

Back then, they might say, "You should enter such and such contests as advertized in the local newspaper and win monetary prizes." They were wrong. The idiots who won these monetary prizes had to pay The National Library of Poetry $75 to $100 for a copy of the anthology which their work was printed in. This is wrong. I sent the folks a letter with my credit card # on it asking them to give me my hard-earned money back.

This they did. Before I got to fanstory, I had stuff published and printed in small-press magazines which your neighbors would never bother to read. I've been writing since high school. Some people thought I would never publish or make money off my writing, even if it was just change for a chicken sandwich and a Coke.

They were wrong. When I had some 60 poems published in little magazines, I made a little less than $200 altogether. When I moved away in 2000 with my mom, I stopped subscribing to the magazines altogether. That was eight years ago.

Since coming to fanstory in 2005, I have too much material, but I have 3 to 4 times more the readership with my own writing here than I used to have when my material was in print.

My point is... Perhaps your "friends" ought to shut up and see your writing for what it is. If they give you advice and tell you what and how to write or that it will never amount to anything or they would rather not read it (apart from having your fellow fanstorians read it) then they aren't your friends at all, are they?

You write what you wiil, and you write when you must, and you've kept your day job, so if your neighbors, friends and co-workers tell you to stop writing, don't listen to them. If need be, tell 'em to shut up, if you can gather the resolve to say it.

My own writing has more life in it than I do. I'm saying all this, and amazingly, I was born the same year as you.

When you write, someone will read your writing, and that is the only gratification in this world you need.

Shane

Thank you very much for this review. Poerty.com soes deliver what it states, I attended the convention realizing the truth about judging and I felt that it was worth it, more for the people I met, but the seminars were very good as well. I enjoyed the affair. Publishing is in the sworks as I am a printer and my hand bind books for a while and recordings, I thnk they may be more popular then print. I have to set up a business for that one because of the UPC's you need for trade.

FS is my favorite, and to feel well read, i just need a good job and the encouragement is very fine too. Thank you very much for sharing your story, your compliments and this review. I appreciated them all.

Now is it not what I told you? it is also a bit frightening, my dear knight that one finds kindred souls on wires, or is it wireless, what do I know?

A poem putting in contrast the real world and the virtual world of Fanstory.
The real world is often cold and people often don't speak, don't hear, don't care ( unless hou're a friend). They take advantage and may kick you around if you stand in their way. The virtual world of FS puts like minds together, full of warmth, support and kindness. It's 'a portal to the vast world." Very vivid imageries and fertile imagination.

I agree, and may even add that sometimes it is one's "friends," with the attitude. I enjoy what this site has to offer, including world exposure and the many thoughtful challanges that are allowed to play out. As far as I am concerned, great minds think a like and I not only openly try to promote the site, this is where I first release a poem and maintain my electronic portfolio. Thank you very much for this review.

We tend to get what we project. Thats why some say fake it till you make it. It starts with us and perception. Nothing really changes until we first change our perception and beleif systems. It is a dream, an illusion, to me, at least. Why not se ethe brighter side.? Great write, my friend. Thanks for sharing it. tj

I agree, but fake it can sometimes, just trying to find their way. Eventually we try so many things a combination fill our whole being. Me, I stopped faking it until puberty was finished, then became a unique individual acception of both sucess and the adventure of failure. "until we first change our perception and beleif systems." I enjoyed that statement and feel it is indeed correct, also our limitations. Thank you for your compliments and review.

A portal into the vast world
that put like minds together,
adding that spiritual quality
that makes this day better.

This stanza in particular stood out for me. It reminds me that the internet can be a good thing too, if only we would all use it for such. Thanks for putting this common emotion into an uncommonly good write.
Sincerely,
Curt

"The don't hear, how" should be "they" "expected form above" should be "from"

Hey Mike. This is reclusive almost! Well done just sad in its own way.

Sad? Such can be the real world. I take for my real world exactly what I want to make it good! I think another way this is sad, people should just be more there in the real world, they have more of a stake in it then they really want to imagine. Hey, there's a word that's needed. Thanks for the review and the compliments.

Hey Mike, on those typos I mentioned, you do know that you can go in after a piece is posted and edit it, right?

ah, Mike, this is sad really where our real world (or everyday world, because we are real people here, too)...has a difficult time... I think those that write are just more sensitive to others and their surroundings on an emotional and spiritual level..so we tend to understand what hurts us, so we are more careful of others..and we have a different awareness of the world and people if that makes sense to you...but, this was nicely executed..hehe, no pun intended..I enjoy your thoughts and your open honesty that is so endearing to see..nice write..I have the same situation in my life, others not so sensitive, the gentle heart has a hard time comprehending the reason behind destructive behaviour, or what it considers that...hugs twomoon

i wonder what was the response? but why do your co-worker tired of readin? do they have to read? how does that happen?

but your thought is that some people want others to do it their way rather than take from someones individualisms ... some people don't like different.

Maybe they are scared, they was what happens to the writer. lol I also talk about the interelationships and the fact that we share concerns and support each other, plus have a good time usually. That could be it. Thanks for the compliments and review. Shoe phone for the rest.

Hi Mike. Yes you are so right. This place is wonderful and has certainly saved me from myself if you know what I mean. I can talk to anyone on here knowing that they are not going to say anything disgusting to me as can happen in other chat rooms. I found yuor poem very interesting and thought-provoking. In the first stanza you have written virtual word and I guess it should be world. We are all happy to have you on this site with us

Hello, quiet a poetic response to a putdown. I enjoyed the mood of the work and could sense the frustration. It made me think of the virtual world of FanStory, as opposed to my real life in the now...family and friends etc. I guess we are all here for different reasons but it is still a community of people and we are joined by our love of poetry, so it is real in that way. I like FS because I can say what i like, no one knows me, and that frees me to be myself. I'm shy in the real world, but here I'm not, heheheeheheh

I found nothing to fix with your poem, and even though you are talking about a particular person and situation, as a reader I was able to apply this to my own experiences, I think it is good if poetry allows you to do that, bye for now, and thanks for sharing your writing, rebekah

Not really frustion, perhaps a bit of indignation. Actually this is sort of a community response, the reality... I only have a couple of hours a day and choose to write, I choose FS because it is a very good venue for having you wroks looked at and needless to say, friendships develope. It is also about common interest, the neighbors and coworkers appear tired at seeing your works. At FS if somebody is, it seems there is another person to fill thier place. I am also told that this will get me no where in society. That response needs no poem, I showed them the thank you card from on of the top business man and most decient. Thank you very much for your compliments and review. I may expand the notes to reflect this.
