This poem is very well done, most of us (or at least me) can relate to being scared of monsters under the bed. You tell your tale is such a creative way. Enjoyed reading your poem & thanks for sharing

This is wonderful, Al. It truly conveys a sense of fear. The wording is powerful and vivid. As an adult, I came to wonder about the wisdom of having children pray this prayer before bed:

Now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray the Lord my soul to keep.
If I should die before I wake,
I pray the Lord my soul to take.

I'm surprised children ever got to sleep. I suspect most of us simply repeated the words by rote without thinking about the meaning.

Wonderful job, Al!

Yes, I have often wondered if that were a good prayer for children to repeat, especially at night. Thanks for a great review.

A.T.E. This is a wonderfully worded poem. Every word seems necessary. The rhythm and the rhyming are excellent. The
content of the poem is presented to the reader as a kind
warning of what childhood distress this type of fear causes.
Excellent. Good Luck in the contest. __MG

Your poem certainly describes fear, both from the point of view of a child, and from the perspective of an adult, trying to reason with their own soul. I liked the descriptors you used and found the work to be whole and it encompassed the topic completely.

Alvin, whenever I hear parents intentionally tell children things to scare them, I just want to shake them into the next century. To be sure, they have no idea how much damage they are imparting to their very own bloodline. I just cannot understand it. This is very well done. Good luck in the contest.

Yes, I have the same feeling, as well. Some people say scaring children is a good way to get them to obey, but I think Love is a much more powerful tool than Fear. Thanks for a good review.

Beautiful sonnet, Alvin, and I couldn't agree more with your message. I still remember how I tried to find a different ending for Hansel and Gretule [Sp?] and always had streaks of tears streaming downwhen my mother sang one song, as she polished our lamp chimneys or dusted picture frames:

Two little babes were stolen away
and his in the woods one bright summer day,
and when they were dead, a robin so red
Brought strawberry leaves and over them spread.

My mother's pretty and clear contralto made the song terrible to me. These may be minor, or less disabling than the truly scary things you write of, but they gave special authenticity to your heart-felt comments.

As always, it is a pleasure to read your poems.

All the best, Doris

No, that would have scared me, too. I wonder why your mother sang that song. Thank you for catching the gist of this poem and for a good review.

I dunno, Alvin, but I do remember that she sang this little sing-songy thing as she dusted. Maybe it was the rhythm!

    Thanks for your interest! Doris

Hello Alvin,

Childhood fears can be very real and many can relate to them. This poem reads and flows well and certainly has great imagery. The author notes are very helpful and the
count of the sonnet is on target. This was a pleasure to
read. Thanks for sharing. Alvin, you're very talented.

Very nice written Poem of fear..In child's mind always wonders what is around them even for small things gives them a creepy imagination..Too funny! Even when I was a child I think I see crazy images form in the wall..But the truth is just nonsense stains..Loll.. And scares myself for nothing. Silly me!!

One thing I don't get this word sprites(elfish person)?? is not spirits..because after that you've mention dwarves is not the same? haaa.haaa. I'm just scattered brain maybe it's different elves are fairy malignant and dwarf are smaller than regular size.....ahhhh!! forget what ever I said~ i'm just twisting your poem and making you crazy!! loll

thank you for sharing!

Children fears and night time terrors are something everyone can relate too. Talking about the devil stealing their souls to his liar even makes me a little scare. Very good read, with a nice flow. No errors, thanks for sharing.
