Democracy only works if people vote. The poem brings that into focus. Democracy often becomes a tool of the majority, but OUR democracy is tempered for the rights of everyone via our constitution. You are quite correct in stating that more people vote on an issue of contention.
Yes, it is always better to vote than use guns. I am a firm believer in compulsory voting. Technically, the poem is sound. It is well written.
