Birth is always a worrying time and your story transmits that sense of worry and of urgency graphically. Your readers are right there with you. I know that I breathed a sigh of relief at the happy outcome.

Just one thing that struck me. I think tension is diminished by information not directly relevant to the story, especially close to the climax. With that in mind, how would cutting this part affect the sense of urgency?
The main house, though, was in complete darkness but that didn't surprise me. Morton was at least thirty years senior to Carol who was in her late forties. He needed his sleep. However, in his waking hours, you wouldn't know he was closing in on eighty. But enough of Morton.
After all, what does Morton have to do with the story?

Thank you so much, Tony. I'm glad you liked the story. I also see what you're saying. That paragraph should be removed. Thanks again. Ulla:)))

What a heartwarming and cute story. At first, I thought it was a story about a grandchild being born. A horse, a baby horse that's so cute. Best of luck on the contest.
Keep writing:)

A very good story, Ulla, that flows well from beginning to end. At least Carol didn't have bad news to relay over the phone. You do a good job with the atmosphere and setting as you got to the stables. I like your line, "Enough of Morton!"

It was good that the vet got there in a timely fashion. It must have been amazing seeing a foal being born. I am glad it was a happy ending for all concerned! Very well done.

Why anyone would like the smell of manure, I don't know. But for some crazy reason, I love the smell of a barn, and yes, manure mixed with the scents of hay and straw. I have an excuse because it's familiar to me. Since I bred and raced thoroughbreds my whole life, like my dad and grandfather before me. LOL. Thanks for sharing.

Well, so you know exactly where I'm coming from, Ric. I've owned quite a few horses, and this story is based on my life. The mare and the foal were mine. Horses have been a big part of my life. This actually took place on stud farm in Denmark. Thanks so much
    for your review. Ulla:)))

Now I know why we share thoughts. When I decided to retire and sell everything off, I had 47 in training, and then of course the mares, fouls, and yearlings on the farm. It's a great game if you don't get old. LOL.

Nice story. Well written. Error-free as near as I can tell.
I had to pull a calf once. He was a beauty. Too much a beauty. The cow was a specimen to behold, and the bull quite a figure of a charolais. The calf could have been a trophy, but he was too much so. It took so long to extract the beast that he was D.O.A. Too much of a good thing, I guess.

Aw, I am so sorry to hear that, Wayne. What a heartbreak and a loss that must have been. I can totally relate. The mare and foal in this story were actually mine. Ulla:)))

I can really imagine from your story the emotion felt as that little foal entered the world! It's an absolute miracle of life when they can immediately stand as well when you think of how limited human babies are at birth. A great idea to have this as a subject for the contest read. I enjoyed it immensely. Good luck! Debbie

A foal to love and treasure. Horses are gorgeous animals and also very dangerous if you don't know how to treat them. The birth of a little foal is quite amazing to see; thank God that the foal was alright.

I have never seen a horse give birth but cows are a different thing. Beautiful, how something such as a calf or colt can be laid on the ground and within hours be running about like a spinning top. God is good.
