Wow, quite a family of twelve, and your birth order and being a female did not help your prospects.
I am sorry your dad was so set in his ways. While you could not go to school to be a vet, you made a satisfying life for yourself.
Good luck in the contest.
Good job. I enjoyed your story and courage.

Thank you. My father was old-fashioned, even for his time. It doesn't matter. I loved my dad with all my heart and soul. I still miss him today.

We do love them for all their ways. He meant no harm, he was raised when a girl was expected to get married.

I have read all the entries in this contest. Some of the others are very good. Several hit on familiar subjects about opportunities. I like yours the best because you connected with specific examples of how your life developed despite your father's expected limitations. You were able to find some happiness and satisfaction doing what you wanted to experience. Well done. Terry.

Thank you for your vote of confidence. My life turned out okay even if my father was very restrictive. He was more old-fashioned than the other fathers in our neighborhood, but I loved him wilh all my heart and soul. I still miss him today.

No doubt in my mind. Like my father, they were products of their time, much like we are.

Beautiful story and a very well written one. One does have to make allowances for cultural differences through the generations. I am glad you were able to satisfy your desire to care for animals in such a fine way with your second husband. Best wishes for your entry.

Thank you. I still have six cats and a dog. All the cats were throw-aways, and the dog came from a foster home. I can't understand why people pay hundreds of dollars for pedigree pets when other cats and dogs need homes so badly.

And you are just the cutest cherub in that rocker. I love black and white photographs. I did not grow up in the 50s but enjoyed reading your account of experiencing that era and parenting of those days. Seems that some of the old fashion ways should still be around today. Mankind has advanced to allow women into meaningful and powerful jobs but it is still backward in understanding the fundamentals of good soulful living. Thank you for sharing this enlightening story of your life as a female in the 50s.

Thank you. I agree, while some progess is great (medicine for example) it seems we have lost the values of morality and family. Family was everything in the fifties, and now it seems to matter little.

Despite the sadness, this story reflects a new twist on womanhood, acceptance of what was pushing through pain, and thankfully happiness. I wish you well in the contest

I totally understand. I had the exact same problem with my dad. I was a teacher because veterinarians were out of the questions for females. Thank you for sharing this contest entry with. I enjoyed reading and wish you luck with the contest.

Thank you. I bet you would have made a wonderful veterinarian. So many of your posts have to do with animalls.

Funny how I seldom read stories as I am so busy but yours intrigued me so I read every word.
Seems like we are around the same age... I was born in 1948...
but my life was very different.
When I was eleven years old my father said I could be anything I wanted to be...even the President of the United States!
I was the eldest of three girls...
I just love that everything you hoped for came and that you are happy! Your parents adored you and of course your father protected you which is so wonderful.
Did you have a lot of children?

Thank you. I don't have any children. I know you will find it hard to imagine, but I had three sons and lost them all. The first one was born premature and lived only three days. I lost another to viral pneumonia when he was two months old, and my last son was killed in a hunting accident when he was sixteen. It was hard, but I have learned to live with it after all these years. I'm two years older than you, as I was born in 1946. My father was extremely old-fashioned and set in his ways. I loved him very much and wanted to please him.

Oh no.... I am heartbroken for you... How on earth is that possible.
I also wanted to please my father... I too loved him very much... If you have the time you might enjoy the Romance story for a contest I wrote a while back about my life...

Thank you. I can't say life has always been easy, but who can? I'm seventy-seven now and content with my life.

Great story! Your expressive words and imagery took us right into your life. I certainly can relate to those times of just what was expected of us as women. I so admire the women who helped break the mold.
I'm happy for you that .... In your own way... you managed to become involved with those activities that brought you closer to your dreams. Thanks for sharing your experiences with us.

Thank you. If I had it to do over, I would have gone to college after my first husband and I got a divorce.

This has a goodmessage.I likehow you cintrast the past with the future. Things were quite different back then. However, you may get a discussion going about how little has changed. I think a lot of it has to do with the make up of women and how they buoy (not pun intended) each other to stand up for themselves & each other.

Thank you. I think you are right. Some women are more determined to pursue their goals. My sister who became a nurse, is a good example. She decided not to marry and so she never did. She turned ninety today and has lived a fulfilling life.

Yay...more power to her...a good role model. My role model is Sue on Life Below Zero. She's a lot younger but has a hard life. She helps me to getstuff done. I don't wonder when I should sled my bag of pellets in.
She would say, "Put your big girl panties on & do it." So I just do it.
