It's a very scary thing to go through an experience like this. Luckily, it doesn't happen with as much frequency as it used to. Glad you escaped unharmed and were able to live to talk about it.

Oh my goodness. I'm so glad everyone was all right, but what a horrible experience! This story hit a bit too close to home, as I just returned five days ago from Puerto Plata. Thank goodness my flights both way on JetBlue were comfortable and uneventful.
You told your story well, with no wasted detail, and took me with you every step of the way. I sincerely hope the rest of your trip went well enough to at least make up for some of what you went through. Good luck in the contest.

One of the first stories I've read here that I had to keep reading until the end. Obviously, a gripping incident. But you can write about an intense incident and do it poorly. You did not. Even though you did not use a lot of imagery or descriptive language, you kept me gripped with short powerful sentences that conveyed tension and fear. This is a good story about a most unusual happening when you thought you were simply going on vacation. It was impressive that no one behaved badly, except the guy going for his mile high reward. You Canadians do shine in adversity.

It turned out to be a false alarm, but they couldn't take the chance. That must have been terrifying, and I can see why you might not ever want to board a plane again. Your descriptions were so vivid, I felt I was right there with you.
