That is such a sad, humbling story. There are too many children like that little boy, although not quite such a good speaker. He and millions of children like him, are our future. What does that tell us? We have let them all down. So sad. Well done, this his a heart breaking story. Good luck in the contest. Sandra xx

This is a touching story Loretta and you were brave to work in Brazil as it is a dangerous country. Because the people are poor they will rob you with violence if necessary. I visited Manaus when I took a trip down the Amazon by boat; I didn't know what to expect, but I wanted to see the Opera House which was built by the Portuguese. A party of people went ashore and many of them were robbed. I didn't take anything of any value with me as I knew that thieves would be attracted to anything of value. I would never visit the place again because I felt theatened.

This poor boy you describe will do well if he sticks to his word and becomes a seller rather than a thief. It is easy for us to say we would never steal, because we live in an affluent society, but if we were hungry and homeless with no money, would be rob others to survive? I think the answer would be yes. Brazil has a history of corruption that never seems to change and this poor boy has unfortunately been born into a poverty stricken country where crime seems the only solution to gain wealth, it is embedded into their culture.

I loved your kind words and likening the boy to some great leader as he knew just what to say to touch hearts and encourage the passengers to give their money.

I enjoyed your story which is sensitive and well written.

Just a couple of edits for these lines for you:

(But then (the) door breezed open and a child stood)

(All I want to do (is) help my poor family)

This post deserves a six.

What a wonderful, sweet, sad story this was, Loretta. Perhaps you were swindled, perhaps not, but I could see, through the poignancy of your tale, how you felt compelled to be generous to this sad, but courageous little boy who so convincingly described his plight. What a sad state of affairs that so many in his country shared his fate to seek a life of begging for his family's survival. This is a very memorable story. Jim

This is an exceptionally well expressed and touching account of this little boy and the poverty that is so prevalent in Brazil. I was absolutely hooked by your story and deeply moved by the theme of the future of Brazil - such eloquent words from someone so young. And how you must want to see him grown-up and hopefully in a respectable job. Because poverty doesn't have to be synonymous with crime and disrespect though you can understand why it so often is. There are some small edits so it might be worth checking yourself. Para starting Hello passengers - all I want (is) to help; para starting Finally - (too) bad there was no chance.. A strong contender for this contest. Good luck. Debbie

As a world traveler visiting countries with lots of young hopefuls, doomed to beg, there are simply no jobs for them, and even if they had so reasonable clothes who is kind enough to employ them, so many children do little prosperity, no wonder Jesus wept. A people without a shepherd. Beautifully written, blessings Roy
