Hi Lisa,
This poem gives such clear images that you don't even need the artwork.
You can picture the beauty of the scene at sunrise. The world's beauty is always something to be grateful for.
Congrats on placing second in the contest.
Keep writing and stay healhty.
Have a great day.
Joan

Oh, I'm out of six stars and your poem so deserves one. I was drawn in to your question--what details would the light unfold. At Dawn, my favorite time of day as well, all of life is silhouettes. That's where you start us. Then you take us through hues of possibility.
I really like this one. I annoint it six stars.

Thanks for your lovely review, Debbie. I'd like to be up at dawn more often but I am such a night owl - not usually going to bed until after midnight. So it feels like a visual treat when I am observing dawn's revelations.

I alternate between staying up late and getting up early. It?s no wonder I can?t sleep.

I was trying to decide whether to enter this contest, as I couldn't come up with something interesting enough in my immediate purview to photograph or write about. After reading this, I don't think I'm even going to bother. This poem is perfect is its rhyme and meter, its painting a visual image, and setting a specific mood and tone. I won't even try to compete with this, but I do hope you win!

Thank you so much for this rave review, Michele! I value your opinion and gaining a 6 from you speaks of praise indeed. I felt good about this poem when I wrote it, which proves the worth of going for a walk to gain inspiration.
reply by Michele Harber on 07-Jun-2023
Absolutely! Unfortunately, a walk in my immediate neighborhood brings me past stores and apartment buildings -- not nearly as inspiring.
reply by the author on 07-Jun-2023
Yes, inner city living must have its drawbacks. I only have to drive 10 minutes before I get to harbourside for a walk.
reply by Michele Harber on 08-Jun-2023
Actually, I live in a very unusual (in a good way) area, but I don't take advantage of it. Yes, one block to the right of where I live is a major thoroughfare, with loads of stores, and direct access to Manhattan. But two blocks the other way is a small lake surrounded by a nature preserve -- right in the middle of Queens, NY! The problem (for me, anyway) is that it requires walking down a mild slope through a woody area along a path of wooden squares (amounting to a segmented boardwalk). My husband and daughter have walked it with some difficulty, but not a lot. I, unfortunately, have balance issues. I tried the walk once, but the path was muddy, and traversing the long step from one wooden square to the next, with mud in between, with my poor balance, seemed like a recipe for disaster. I walked partway, but never made it to the lake. I sent my husband ahead of me, and sat down on a square with a book until he could see the lake, come back, and be available to take my arm whenever I needed on the return trip. So, here I have this wildlife refuge a reasonable walk away -- and have never actually seen what it looks like!

So near, yet so far! I sympathise with your balance issues... if only that path could be built more appropriately for all users. Your neighbourhood sounds fascinating.
reply by Michele Harber on 08-Jun-2023
Actually, it is - but only if you know where to look. The nature preserve is basically between two major thoroughfares, and is impossible to see from one, and only slightly visible from the other. So it's basically only locals - and environmentalists - who know where to look.

I know secret places like that too in my suburb. There is a lovely little walk by a stream out the back of the hospice for instance.

I felt like I just took a nice deep breath and prepared to go out and face the world around me. The weight on my shoulders was a little lighter.

I loved reading your poem LisaMay.
I can envision the walk along the waters edge, enjoying the peaceful stillness of a dawning day. Your use of colour set the scene beautifully and added to the feeling of tranquility.
I could feel the day brightening as I joined you in your early morning walk. I could almost birds waking up and singing to the approaching dawn.
You have a wonderful way of writing, and I always enjoy reading your creations.

Lisamay,
Lovely! Beautifully built and rhymed...
"...Imagination soon took hold ~
on board a yacht, right now, today,
to live a life of freedom bold!
My mind lit up and sailed away.

Such dreams shone in the bright sun's rays,
but time was up, my walk was done.
I said a prayer of grateful praise
then left for work. Day had begun...."
Thank you.
Richard

I love the sea and just to be near it is a vacation. I enjoyed this one of Carey's Bay at sunup. A lovely offering and beautifully illustrated.

Sending you my best today as always and best wishes for the upcoming contest.

Thanks so much, Sal, for your encouraging words.
I grew up in an inland city and the 'romance of the sea' has always captivated me. I'm glad I now live by the sea and can enjoy moments as described in this poem..

Yes, my friend, you take such beautiful pictures which add a superb feel to the poetry you write so lovingly. This rhymes well and I can picture you on a morning still by the bay or oceanfront where the sun slowly rises and your imagination takes hold and gives you a new perspective.
Thanks for sharing this and may you win the contest hands down.

    Hi Jesse,
thanks for your comments and good wishes.
The morning I wrote about in the poem felt really special. I love seeing things at dawn, but as I am more of a night owl it doesn't happen very often.
reply by Jesse James Doty on 05-Jun-2023
Enjoy the dawn when you can, my friend. I used to be a night owl but love the morning as it rises instead of the night.
    Take care,
    Jesse

Thanks for your review Roy. I think I am at my best late at night, being a night owl and not going to bed usually til after midnight, but I do really enjoy special moments when I am up and about early, such as happened to inspire this poem. It's like a time of grace.
