I like the all-encompassing tone of this poem. The first stanza is very strong on realistic detail. I guess the writer has spent quite a lot of time outside if they know what a hidden elk smells like. That is a new image or sensory detail for me. This free verse poem is well-done. I would suggest un-capitalizing the word 'spring.'

You create vivid sensory imagery in your verse. You invite us to taste, smell and feel the wonders of nature in this western setting. There is a sense of wonder and of hope as the day begins on the untouched rangeland.

provoking. I felt the author words were filled with imagination! I really
liked the last line as it implies for me an unrestrained and free mind! The

Beautiful use of language in this poem of the West. I did wonder briefly if you were a bear just out of hibernation, but I believe they have rather foul tempers at that time and crave vegetation to get their digestive systems working again, so would probably uncouthly scoff up all the daylilies at once, then go after the buck. Seriously, a seriously good poem. All the best for the contest, Julie Lau

You certainly use sensory words and descriptive imagery well. When I started to read, I was compelled to write myself a bite, to clean our yard, from the winter sticks that have fallen to the ground. Then, you go on to describe more of the five senses with every word. I enjoy writing that leaves me no choice, but to imagine it. Very good! :)
