An absolutely sad but wonderful story. Thank you for sharing this deeply personal reflection.

Being raised in the way you did, I'm sure, gave you an incredibly different outlook on life than anyone else. Seeing the way you said you "apparently" got into a fight at the orphanage, I'm sure that's a part of you that wanted to block out certain memories of your life there. Unless it's just due to it being so long ago.

Again, thank you for sharing.

Thank you so much, for your heartfelt review. It might seem sad, but I've had a very happy life. I think those early years laid the foundation for who I am and made so much the stronger. Thanks again. Ulla:)))

Hello Ulla, I read your adoption story with keen interest because my husband recently found his three brothers via use of a DNA test through
Ancestry.com. Two of the boys were adopted by the same parents. They wanted an infant, but when the infant had a blood brother available for adoption, they adopted both of them. The older boy answered to the name given to him by his birth mother, so they kept that name which was very kind. After the DNA test and some emails, etc., the brothers met. It was wonderful. They all lived within an hour of each
other and never knew it. Ulla, your adoption story is heart warming. I like that you have the travel bug. You wear two flags proudly. I'm sorry that adoptive mother changed toward you when your father died. I'll have to check out some of your writing, but you have had a wonderful life and found your birth parents here in the USA. Welcome Sister America. A story from the heart. As this is a contest entry, I wish you good luck. LateBloomer

These stories re: family are terrific, and I hope you reads the other entries. I too am an adoptive parent of two daughters who turned out better I hope than had they been kept but their bodily host. They never have enquired or sought out who they were though we would have helped if they had wanted to.

I hope no one ever made you feel like a lesser person for being adopted. It happened once to my daughter, who confided in a classmate about being adopted, and was made fun of for being "unwanted." I told my daughter something that I hope you and every other adoptee will take to heart. When you give birth to a child, you take what you get. When you adopt, you choose the child. You can back out at any point in the process before the papers are signed so, if you actually go through with the adoption, you've already made up your mind that this is the specific child you want, and will love and raise as your own. Often, adopted children are shown even more love and affection because the adoptive parents try so hard to make up for what the child didn't get from their initial set of parents. So, no, being adopted did not make you a lesser person, it made you a chosen person. Congratulations on being able to find and forge a relationship with your birth parents as well. You're definitely lucky to have had two sets of parents as part of your life.

Your story is lovely and honest, and told with warmth and affection. Thank you for sharing. I'm always happy to hear the feelings of people who were adopted, as they help me to understand my own adopted daughter that much more.

Thank you for sharing your story, and for coming up with this contest so the rest of us could share our stories as well. Good luck in the contest.

Thank you so much for this heartfelt review, Michele. It actually brought tears to my eyes.
I found a brother, and we've become very close. I'm now writing the story of our great-grandfather.
I also have a daughter and three young granddaughters.
I remember once, in school that a classmate asked me whether my stepmother was a wicked person. I was twelve at the time and her question shook me to the core.
I'm sure your lovely daughter, Leah, understood what you told her. Yes, an adopted child is indeed chosen. Ulla:)))

This was a lovely story to share, with all of us here on fanstory, you were lucky to have been adopted. And to have had such a positive role model as the man you called father, he no doubt earned it.

Hi Ulla,

your description line gave me a giggle. i believe it's a typo 'none fiction'...

Good for you setting up this competition. I was disgusted by those other rules for that other competition. As I'm sure you probably know, I've worked with kids for nearly 30 years, so it's a very important thing for me, as I know it is for you.

My best friends did the whole fostering/adoption scenario for about six years and now have a forever family with a couple of siblings of their own.

I don't know if being adopted makes one a richer person, but knowing that you were chosen is something special in itself.

All the best
G

Gareth, I can't say how much your review means to me. Thank you so much. Yes, I do know you've worked with kids for a lot of years.
I'm so glad to hear about your friends. I agree to be adopted may not make you a richer person, but in my case I think it did. I ended up having the best of two worlds.
I have made the correction. It made me laugh as well. Yes, it was a typo.
I just had to create this contest. It's my private protest. Ulla:)))

This is a lovely story. How fortunate you were to find your birth family as well and to be welcomed. Of my 7 adopted children, only one has found his father and been accepted. The last four knew their mother as she was our daughter. Thank you for the contest; my kids are people to boast about.

Thank you so very much, Carol. I have been so very fortunate. Now, having said that, it would be lovely if you were to tell your story. You've adopted seven children!! I admire you. You have an amazing story that needs to be told.
I created this contest as a protest. Several family contests kept creeping up on this site and adoption was always prohibited, as if adopted people could not be part of a family. In the end I decided that enough was enough. We are persons with feelings like anybody else. Please, enter the contest. I would so love to hear your story. Ulla:)))

This is great Ulla. You did an outstanding job (as always) in relating the pertinent details in a fashion that keeps the story going, but also incredibly interesting. Thanks for sharing your story with us.

Bravo to you.
For seeing the tremendous good in
all of this, and becoming the person you are.
I wish more people would choose adoption,
instead of abortion.
I love your story.
Blessings...

Thank you so much. Yes, I got lucky, and I'm so grateful for that. I now have a whole new set of family in Mass. And then my daughter, her husband including three granddaughters. I am privileged, indeed. Ulla:)))
