This is really good, K. What a hard life your grandmother had, and such shocking accidents. But you are right medicine was hit and miss back in those days, still is but to a much lesser degree. Grandfather missed out on a lot, and one can only imagine what made him such a callous man.

This is a superb entry into this contest, and I hope the Committee agrees with me. lol

Great job, K. :))

Thank you Gloria. I decided to open the door on what life was like when I was growing up. I can still remember him asking Nana about the creases in his starched white shirts! I was unlucky on two counts, my other grandfather was kicked in the head by a horse and so, I never knew him. My dad was kindness always and I think his father would have been too. Do you wonder why good folk suffer and people like grandfather get away with blue-murder? Nana was such a kind and loving woman, as soon as he was out of the house she kicked off her shoes and told us stories, gave us tribal wisdom. I guess that is why I write about our people and country. Love, Kay. xx

I would have adored your grandmother and it is so sad she did not receive medical attention after her fall. I do not know what could be wrong with your grandfather and his bad personality. Most people are crazy about their grandchildren. This is a great story, I enjoyed reading it, nothing less than a six.

Hello Elaine, Thanks so much for reading. I could never understand his attitude. He was a very clever engineer and he also started a chain of corner shops (37 in all) which he sold to a big supermarket in the sixties. When his Will was read, the four daughters and one son only received $3,000 each. Don't know what he did with the rest of the money, he must have made a tidy sum when he sold the 37 shops! Love, K xx

That is quite an accomplishment, 37 shops!

Wow, this was a great tribulation to your Grandmother/Nana, Kace. I really liked how you shared the details about your grandmother. I do understand your hard feelings for your grandfather, I would as well, he was just plain old uncaring. Good luck in the Share Your Story contest. I loved the picture.

Hello Alie, Thank you for reading. I often wonder why nasty people suffer the least and the good ones suffer the most. K xx

That seems to be the way doesn't it, Kace, you are most welcome.

This is such a moving story about how the aboriginal people weren't treated any better than slaves, even in the middle of the twentieth century. It sounds like your grandfather found someone to be available for sex and to take care of his cooking and cleaning. He clearly had no affection for your Nana. What a remarkable woman to be able to accept and suffer his abusive treatment and remain loving to her children and grandchildren. Being a "sensitive" can be both a blessing and a curse. You have shared a wonderful story that will forever remain meaningful.

I found a couple of little edits:

Continually harassed by my grandfather who was boss in all matters. -- incomplete sentence

she gave birth five children. ==> birth to

called the local Dr. -- better to spell out doctor; same in next line -- the doctor

I told the neighbor "Nana has died" she stood with her mouth open. -- comma after neighbor, period after died, start new swntence with She.

Thanks for reading and editing. Australians tend to write as we speak. I will re edit it. Blessings, Kay.

What an amazing story! You told it so very well. What a shame your grandfather couldn't show love (despite his Bible reading). The ending of the story and the death of your grandmother is very powerful. Well done.

Hi Wendy, Must be getting chilly in the mountains! Yes, he was a mean old man and used nana like a slave. And got away with blue murder - had a big feed of prawns, went for his nap in the afternoon and didn't wake up. I often wonder why nasty people get away with it an nana died a terrible death. K xx
