I raised four boys, each one played football and I warmed the bleacher every Friday night. They started when they were 6 years old. The season actually ends, but football in it's own way is year around. I did love your essay.

****Smirking***********I'm with you. I have nothing against it either except for the fact that the white noise in the background gives me a headache, and IT'S BORING!!!!!!!!
I know exactly what you're talking about. I grew up in Germany, a military brat, and there were no American stations. We had a tiny little black and white TV, and once in awhile we watched Speedracer or Tom and Jerry in German. When we moved back to the U.S. when I was sixteen we had one station that got those three channels. Often there was a family fight over whether we were watching football (dad) or Dynasty (kids).
Those were the good ole' days, because now? I can't even watch TV because I have no idea how to turn it on....too many remotes..all over the place..one for the TV, one for the DVD player, one for Karaoke machine, one for the cable box...I'm clueless...
My husband is the "Lord of the Remote." Pfffttt...I'd rather review and write instead of watch anyway...I do love "Law and Order" though. :)

That was back when we lived life rather than simply watching it.===maybe better to say lived life rather than watched it?

That was back when we lived life rather than simply watching it. << I remember!
Life today is more electronic than natural...even friends are made of pixels and not flesh.
I agree about football, and my mom always watched every game she could find... loved those tight pants and cute butts, I think. But my hubby is not a sports fan, so our house is safe. :)

Hi Debbie, sorry I haven't stopped laughing yet.what a thought to think our favorite TV shows are made up reality, now that just plain sad. And up until this year I was an avid viewer of your American football. But now my spare time is hooked into this new contraption called the computer, writing in a site called fanstory, which sometimes feels as if I'm in a sort of a virtual realty show. You have not got long to go now footballs nearly over, what are the sponsors going to throw their money at now? great write smiled all the way through and the sad thing is was true!Kindest wishes and hopes James xx

You know that football season is over when the TV's are focused on basketball. Too much of anything can get to be annoying. I think this is really what you are saying in the piece, and, I agree. Thanks for sharing, Your friend, Bob

I remember when we had one television as well. Now in my fifties I have six in my house. When it is just me in the house, not a one is on. I value the quiet as it lets me think. I believe that those who can't live with out the television being on all the time are the ones who are afraid to think. Nice job on this.

Ha. Ha. Ha.
Have you forgotten that soon after football comes basketball, NASCAR and baseball - not to mention soccer?
In reading this, I recall as a child watching Howdy Doody on a round black & white tube sitting inside a walnut frame.
Now that it's 2013, I spend my weekday evenings watching shows like M.A.S.H., Bewitched, and I Dream Of Jennie on ME TV.
Not to mention, I've also recently watched The Beverly Hillbillies, Petticoat Junction, Hogan's Heroes, and My Three Sons.
Thanks goodness for oldies stations - since most newer shows on TV aren't worth the time to watch. JW :-)

Good morning... As a short essay I found this to be very informative. Being born in the 50's I can relate to the transition of the TV household "value". I know people who leave it on simply to have voices in the home. Then put the radio on or play your 8 track (remember them).
I didnt quite get the football analogy in regards to the rest of your essay...

Thank you. I started out to write about the football games, but the rest of the essay turned out to be more interesting. How times change. Thank you so very much~Debbie

Hi Debbie!! You are a kindred spirit. I despise football. I think it's the idiocy of the fans that ruins it for me. You would think it's the end of the world if a team loses. And in high school, kids actually had fistfights at rallies. Or pep-sessions...INSANE. I had to just bug out and stay in study hall. I liked playing softball and kickball tho. I could outrun ALL the other kids, boys included up until 8th grade. I was fast. I should have been in girls track. OH well. This is a great and timely post Deb. I could not agree with it more. x. Susan
