How exciting the beach and building sand castles are to a small child. He is now a master builder. We went every weekend to the beach, heaven on earth while living in a city. This is another delightful counting rhyme; besides the counting element, a child becomes aware of all the things that can happen to the lovely sand. Excellent rhyming and imagery, most enjoyable, and of course great pic. Faye

Hello adewpearl, Brooke, A fun poem filled with whoa and some subtle lessons of life. I especially liked:

Eleven grains seemed quite content
to make their home on shore,
but one who longed for something else
now lives on ocean's floor.

(Ahh, proof that life is not always greener on the other side, and we need to choose wisely or else we'll end up on the bottom of the ocean's floor.)

And this one made me laugh:

Two grains were worried that their lives
were getting kind of drab,
till one walked off with no goodbyes,
his new best friend, a crab.

(This verse sparked the following:
Be careful where you sleep, 'cause
When you lay down with dogs, you catch flees ...
and soon the "crabs" (and maybe lice) will follow - lol - just sharing the funny thoughts that pop into my head.)

Very good - very cute. A whimsical poem filled with adventure. Keep the blue waters flowing. LateBloomer

This was delightful and this one went all the way to 12. I enjoyed it very much and love the grain of sand that left without saying goodbye to be with his new best friend, a crab. This reminded me of the many hours of fun I had making sand castles as a child. When we didn't go to the beach I made them out of thick mud and once tried to make an igloo...didn't turn out and I made a terrible mess, but it was great fun trying.

A great kids poem. I loved this stanza as it was so funny:
"Two grains were worried that their lives
were getting kind of drab,
till one walked off with no goodbyes,
his new best friend, a crab."
Well done, Brooke.

There are so many grains I never thought to count them before....
Precious precious I saw pictures in my minds eye too. Did you know crabs when they shed their carapace put a grain of sand in a cavity. That's how they know they are right side up or not..lol
God bless

Hi Brooke - another clever and imaginative counting poem. I think my favourite line is the one that decided to hang out inside a tidal pool. Good abcb throughout. Perfect enjambment every stanza. Not just a good poem but you are educating Sawyer as well - he's a lucky little boy. (syllable count last line?) Warm regards Dorothy x

Thanks so much, Dorothy. The final line is 6 syllables because toward is pronounced as one syllable in the U.S. - tward :-) Brooke

Thanks Brooke for the explanation - we all speak English but not with the same pronunciation. LOL - Dorothy x

I love your counting poems, Brooke, and am pleased that you've posted another. The lucky ten little grains of sparkly sand are quite lucky to have such an accomplished write about them! :)

Amazing personification you've given these little guys -- interesting and exciting lives to be sure even though a few had to suffer from being squished between toes.

Great meter, rhyme, alliteration and enjambment to promote your fun flow of words.

I'm waiting for the book! Alana

It's always a delight, Brooke, to discover how you are
going to come up ten different episodes. Who knew grains of sand were so interesting--and aspiring. Hitching a ride on a starship, er, starfish. Clever.
I also admire the grain that got a new view from the castle.
Very inventive, Brooke.

Peace, Lee
