Hi Brooke

I've no sixes, but this is good. I like this sonnet. I've only ever posted one here (A World Too Small)and should have put that it was a modern sonnet, it might have got a better reception.

I am 100% with you on this matter. I like the idea that we go through life backwards only seeing what is passed.

Still, the temptation would be felt if someone hwld the chance out to me...but, no, carry on regardless!

Lovely

Gavin

HurricaneDean, one of my favorite writers online, alerted me through his posts to the modern sonnet designation. Before that if I called a piece a sonnet the poetry police counted my every meter and scolded me, and if I did not label it anything, they assumed it was a sonnet and still scolded me. I could have reached through the computer and kissed Dean, a much younger man, when he posted a modern sonnet and explained the designation in his author's notes.
So now, I head the poetry police off with this designation.
Thank you for your most thoughtful response :-) Brooke

Your sonnet is written very well and your thoughts about "knowing" ahead of time is a common theme among us all. I'm being checked for cancer and I wish that I had the answer "right now!" There certainly are certain matters that are good to know ahead of tiime. tony

This verse reminded me of a song Garth Brooks sang. I don't remember the title, but it was something about "if I knew what tomorrow brought, I might avoid the pitfalls, but I'd also miss the dance." Of course, I think he was talking about marrying someone whom he ultimately divorced, but that's beside the point! I'm not a huge Garth Brooks fan, but that song always touched me --as does your verse. Very well done.

This premise is one we all need to be reminded of on a regular basis.

thanks. ann

You just gave me a huge laugh, both with your wit and because I never thought I'd write anything akin to a country song LOL
I'm a Janis Joplin kinda gal myself :-) Thank you! Brooke :-)

I liked Janis Joplin, too! Do you remember the one:

Oh lord, wont you buy me a mercedes benz ?
My friends all drive porsches, I must make amends.
Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my friends,
So lord, wont you buy me a mercedes benz ?

Oh lord, wont you buy me a color tv ?
Dialing for dollars is trying to find me.
I wait for delivery each day until three,
So oh lord, wont you buy me a color tv ?

Oh lord, wont you buy me a night on the town ?
Im counting on you, lord, please dont let me down.
Prove that you love me and buy the next round,
Oh lord, wont you buy me a night on the town ?

I only have one of her albums and that song is on it. Don't know why it hit me so, but it is the only one she sang that automatically became part of my memory!

that particular song brings back memories of my being so spitting pissed! The Mercedes company actually used that song years after her death to sell their damned cars - I wanted to scream on her behalf. I'm more into her more hard hitting songs like Ball and Chain - I had the pleasure of seeing her in person a few times - tiny tiny girl with more balls than an entire football team !

You are so right and, you know, her Texas birthplace --what was it, Port Arthur-- didn't care to celebrate who she was until after she wasn't anymore. She was my age, having been born in 1943, and a rebel I could admire. I think one of her heros was Leadbelly? Not sure, but he was a blues singer I liked and she reminded me of. Anyway, he died way, way too young.

Wonder if she would have seen the irony in her song being used to sell Mercedes, maybe not.

have enjoyed this conversation this morning! Thanks. Guess I better get to work now. ann

oh, I'm positive she would have seen the irony!

Yes, dear Brooke, and you just keep on writing modern sonnets; they have deep roots, in fact. Never mind the rule tyrants, without a soul for poetry's essence. I understand that each day's events are unpredictable, but, with our faith, we know we'll be secure, when no more troubles pain and the tears will be wiped from our eyes. This I guarantee. Peter

Thank you, Peter, for my very first review of this poem.
You are most insightful and philosophical in your response.
    Peace, Brooke : -)

Hummm? Philosophical, really? Perhaps it's my great age. Thanks, but I owe some of my late accumulating sagesse to a bountiful stream into which I've tapped. If that's a bit obscure, I'll write a sonnet about it, IN CAPITALS.
