Oh Dean, this is so tragic, and so beautifully scribed! What an amazing tribute to those innocent lives - I'm struggling not to sob as I type. Incredible imagery evoked, such powerful, poetic language - just wonderful.

Thank you, Dawn. I'm honored that it touched you so deeply. It certainly did me as I read the memoirs of the poor doomed children who inspired it.

I sincerely appreciate everything you said.

solid use of abab rhyming
good touches of alliteration
grief-stricken pain - add the hyphen
white billowing plumes - this stanza really grabs the reader
thank you for the author notes which provide such tragic context for your most meaningful poem

I am so glad I found this. I have long admired your writing, and when I saw what this was about I had to read it. It moved me profoundly, as does everything on this subject. I first learned about the Holocaust when I was eleven years old. The war was ending, and I saw the newsreels and read the stories about the camps. At the time I didn't know the word Holocaust, and I didn't knew who Jews were. My parents said that in twenty years it would all be forgotten. I decided that would not be the case, at least not with me. I am still trying to deal with it, and I am as far away as ever from understanding it. Thank you for this wonderful piece of writing. Thank you so much, Marilyn, I'm honored. I'd like to think that the ordeals those poor souls endured will never be forgotten. As long as people have a voice and the breath to use it, I don't believe it ever will. Again, thanks so much for such an awesome review. I'm truly grateful.

The author's notes stirred me profoundly. A child's suffering is like no other, these innocents, God's gift, violated by the cruellest of man's instincts.

The poem, raised my hackles, such delicately crafted wizardy, perfect execution, the captivating painting, the blue on black prose, the ancient celtic undertones: o'er, befalls, anew, yon, on the morrow. A worthy student of Shakespeare, such rivetting poetry.

Thank you very much, Alex. It was inspired while I read some memoirs of children imprisoned during the holocaust. I wept when I read some of their heartbreaking words, and I'm not shamed to admit that. I was researching for a new horror tale, and ran across them. I guess my muse had other things in mind for me last night besides horror fiction.I very much appreciate your very thoughtful review, my friend.

Thank you for sharing this heartbreaking but beautiful poem. I think it is perfect as it is and would not change a thing. Also, thank you for mentioning the gypsies in your footnotes... they are so often forgotten.

Hi Dean, I am delighted to see your poem here about the suffering and the persecution at the hands of the Nazis, and others. It still baffles me as to how this could have happened in the 20th cerntury, I wonder if you know about Irwna Sendler, she saved over 2,500 children during this time, I have written about her.
Thank you for highlighting this holocaust, because we should never forget those victims. We may learn something from it, who knows?
Well done. Mary

Yes, I learned quite a bit, Mary. I was reading some of these poor, doomed children's memoirs last night while doing some research for a new story, which inspired me to write this. So gut wrenching & horribly heartbreaking!

Thanks for you very thoughtful review!

A very compassionate and thoughtful poem which serves as a stark reminder of a terrible time in history.
So many beautiful children were robbed of life by the ruthless
and macabre orders of a dictator.
May their souls rest in peace.

Thank you very much, Nicci, I was reading some memoirs of several small children written during the Holocaust, and I'll admit, I simply began crying like a baby. My wife wondered if I was going crazy.

This poem was a result of those gut wrenching writings. I felt I owed it to them somehow.
