Brooke, This is an excellent write and a real tribute to Earth Day. I like the comparison of Mother Earth and our Mothers. Spending my first 15 years one a farm, growing things and caring for the soil; I observed that there are two types of soil: clean fertile and dirty barren. Clean soil produces fruits. Dirty soil produces nothing healthy to utilize. Too much of earths clean soil is being covered up with buildings, paved streets and road and contaminated with the many things that make it dirty. The future, to be healthy, must have fewer people and more forests. Else, we will have more Shanty towns in deserts. I wish I could give you SIX for this one, But not it is not permitted. Your admirer, Bob

This a wonderful prose to honor Earth day! Well written and thought provoking! Full of truths we should all address to learn to lessen our wastefulness and re plant what we have sown!

Your excellent use of words shows how we take from the earth and we will not be able to keep taking without consequences. But mothers have their limits is a real truth and mother earth has her limits.

I like the message in this poem. If we keep making demands on the earth, a day will come when she cannot give any more. And that will be the day marked as 'declined.'
I like the rhymes: kind/mind/find/declined. And the word declined conjures an imags of a giant rubber stamp coming down with a loud crack on an application form: DECLINED!
Cheers,
DW

We definitely need to take better care of the earth. Such is the human condition that we believe we have control of the planet, but it is the planet, in fact, that has power over us. A great little poem!

What a great poem! Your descriptive language flows smoothly, and tells a simple story. The picture is perfect for this piece too. Nice job!

I recycle, reduce water use, shade windows, use re-useable grocery bags and try to do as much as I can to help the planet stay alive for the future. But I never feel like it's enough. So many think it won't happen in their lifetime so why bother by making an effort. Your poem drives that point home that each person who uses the resources the earth gives us needs to take this seriously. Excellent poem, Brooke.

Karyn, the problem is all those people who do nothing you do, and it doesn't even bother them! Thanks so very much, my thoughtful friend and responsible world citizen :-) Brooke

I guess I missed it was Earth Day but your poem makes a very important point, one we need to take seriously. Kiss baby Sawyer for me. My book is officially on amazon.com. Dean may be in Heaven but I'm sure he knows it has finally happened. God loves you and I do too.

Evelyn, thanks so very much :-) Sawyer is now back in California after a flight that was delayed over three hours while they were stuck in the plane. And God bless him, he didn't shed one tear in all that confinement :-) Brooke

And a happy Earth Day to you!
I like the extended analogy of Mother Earth used in this poem to explain the limitations of the planet. Nothing is as greedy as humanity....

Hi Brooke! You've penned a very thoughtful message and warning for humanity about the earth, and have done a beautiful job personifying the Earth as a benevolent mother. What a great reminder for Earth Day!
