Barbara, it is horrible to lose him, but since he was 92, we all knew it had to come some time. that doesn't make it easier to take, though, does it? Thanks so much. Brooke

    brooke,
yeah, at 92 every day you wake up is a blessing. especially if you still have your senses.

This is a very well written tribut to a very great man. News reporting has never reached the penacle when Walter was at the helm.

Thank you for the banner, Charlie - I'm touched :-) No, no other reporter ever will, either :-) Brooke

Good sentiment for those that were not there. It was a touching moment in true journalism. Try to find that these days. Geraldo maybe? I think not!

Thanks for sharing.

Geraldo - oh, that just sent creepy shivers down my spine. The ghost of Kurt Vonnegut just turned over in his grave. LOL
Thanks so much, my friend :-) Brooke

This is an excellent cinquain tribute to Walter Cronkite, Brooke. Nothing about it that I don't like or don't think is effective. The alliteration is particularly well done.

For someone of my generation who viewed the broadcast by Cronkite on that horrible day, you bring his announcement of JFK's death back vividly. That moment when his voice cracked and his awestruck enthusiasm for all things NASA is what I remember most about the talented man.

Yes, I loved his coverage of all the space flights - remember the good old days of low tech dioramas when they would go on the air hours before take off, which would then get delayed, and Cronkite would just talk on and on and on for hours about the space program, explaining things with those funny little dioramas :-) I loved him so. Thanks so much. Brooke

I didn't see the headlines yet. Wow, He was one in a million. I loved Walter. I remember those times so very well. What a wonderful tribute. Beautiful

They broke into the television last night during the 8 oclock shows. I was unable to write until this morning. Thank you, Joy. Brooke :-)

An excellent poem Brooke and I agree so well with your words about this man. Over the years his professionalism gave voice to important stories from your beautiful country. May he rest in peace

An excellent poem, Brooke. I remeber the events noted in your author's notes qute well and, as do you, I connect them with Walter Cronkite. All of these were seminal events for me as they were for you. Larry

Brooke, whilst I enjoyed reading the beautifully written cinquain, I did not understand it at all until I read your author notes. Of course, living in the UK, I do not know this reporter at all. I do understand how the 'voice' of a much loved and respected reporter can become part of life. I am sorry someone with so much influence on your life has passed away.
Warmest wishes
Kat

Kat, yes, some poems include imagery that is only understandable to a more limited audience. Any American over 40 knows what Camelot means right away, and many under 40, but yes, it is not reasonable to think the entire world would get this :-) Thanks for your kind review. Brooke

A beautiful tribute to a wonderful man, Brooke. I remember being glued to the TV set the day that JFK was shot in Dallas. I saw Walter Crokite's newscast and heard his usually unshakeable voice crack. I cried too. I remember watching him the day he reported the moon landing. He was the voice of a generation. Now silenced, but never forgotten. Your cinquain is perfect. Rose.

Rose, the moon landing anniversary is but a few days away - I wonder if they will bury him on that anniversary - it would be so appropriate. thanks so much. Brooke :-)

I hope you are not the only one who is thinking that this would be such a fitting tribute. Call your local news station and make the suggestion that they air those sentiments. Perhaps, it will catch on.

I knew his voice well enough, but not much about the man himself. I am just now finding out he died. He's one of those like Peter Jennings, you just don't expect it. Good poem here and informative notes.

He was 92, so it's not like we didn't know it was coming, but just a world without him seems a bit empty - he was a family member to the millions of homes that had him in each night, linking us to the rest of the world :-) Thanks, Sam. Brooke
