Very sad day in our history. It is truly amazing how one family could endure all of the heartbreak and misery a world of evil men and sometimes just bad luck and misfortune can heap upon them. I know they all had skeleton's in the closet, but murder is never warranted unless, in my opinion heinous crimes are committed.
Sorry for the rant. Great tribute to Bobby

I've never met a perfect person. The skeletons, in my view, did not come close to outweighing the huge amounts of good. Thanks so much, Brooke :-)

Thanks for the poem about Robert Kennedy. It's true that events like that change our lives forever. I also copied the quote you mention. I will cherish it. Thanks Beverly

I admire Bobby Kennedy as well. It spoke from the heart, for the little people who didn't have a voice. My favorite quote is something like " some people asked themselves "Why", I ask myself, "Why Not." My best to you.

Yes, I love that quote too - Teddy quoted that during his eulogy, and that is when his voice broke - that is a moment I will never forget. Thank you, Brooke

This is a moving poem - you're really getting into these rispettos (I keep wanting to write 'risotto'). This one is sad - the event and its effect on you: disillusionment is always devastating. I particularly like "Idealism's light went dark" and the contrast in that line. It flows and rhymes beautifully of course. :)

Adele, thank you. Yes, this had a great effect on my life. I appreciate your thoughtfulness - and your humor. Will you take that poem marinara or with meatballs? LOL Brooke

Well actually, I'm not a real fan of pasta....could you write one in pizza next time please? lol
reply by Jazh on 05-Jun-2009
As I finally wake up this morning, I realise that "risotto" is actually rice not pasta...so it's mutated to 'ravioli'. Neither of which I like anyway. I make no excuse for my addled brain, except to say that it is suffering from nicotine-deprivation, and menopause-induced brain damage. I want a pizza pome, please...following the Italian theme! lol

I'll mull over the whole pizza thing LOL I wonder what greater significance I could find in those little circles of pepperoni ;-)
reply by Jazh on 05-Jun-2009
As a talented pote, I'm sure there is significance in every component of pizza! I'd like to see you find a rhyme for 'mozzarella' - hehehe.

    how about happy fella?
reply by the author on 05-Jun-2009
I made my man a happy fella
    by adding extra mozarella
reply by Jazh on 05-Jun-2009
Hmmm....not bad at all. Two lines doth not a pizza make though....lol

Brooke - I was in college during those days, and it impacted all of us starting with MLK's assassination two months before. Terrible times. Enjoyed your poem. Charlie

It truly is a shame that when this country of ours takes a step forward someone has it in their head to take that away. It has happened several times throughout history. Sometimes the person gave enough of a boost t get the ball rolling and made a huge contribution before someone decided his (or her) time on Earth must come to an end; sometimes the ideas remain, but are hardly ever carried out. As you said, Robert Kennedy, his brother John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Abe Lincoln, John Lennon (yes I know he is different than other people, but he made a tremendous mark and was shot down before he had finished)-those are just a few of the leaders that were taken from us before their tasks were finished. I've heard it said that it is a government conspiracy to rid the country of all those who have it in their head to change it (for the better, mind you), but then I've heard that they were all semi-random acts-crazed people did it for the publicity they would receive and the fact that those they were after made themselves a target just by being in the lime light and voicing the need for change (the definite crazed one is the man that shot John Lennon down in front of his home-possibly stalking is a better word for some). In my opinion, it is absolutely ridiculous and there is a cry for change when it comes to that field. I'm afraid to even think it, but the Secret Service needs to keep close tabs on our current President-that, or more over HE, will be the next big change our country will see (I believe).

You did a fine job on this piece that commemorates this sad day in history, and in your personal life (I'm very sorry to hear that was the day you lost your youth).
Thank you for remembering him, and for showing this to us all so that we would remember him.
Excellent job!!
Jaded:)

I have copied that quote to keep close at
hand and read whenever ignorance or intolerance
makes me want to bang my head on a wall, or
something. I remember that awful day so well,
it came ten days after my husband left for Viet
Nam. Your poem is incredibly powerful. Thank you!
Carolyn

Oh, what a terrible time for it to come in your life - my boyfriend's draft number was 77 in 1969, but luckily he got a 4F deferment. Thank you for your thoughtful comments. Brooke

Brooke strikes again!
Once again you have written a brilliant piece. You are better than the news and better than poetry. You should write a poetry book where each poem has a description of what you were thinking or whats going on. I go to your poems because I know I will LEARN something. thats what distinguished your poetry. its fucking serious. you got a Brooke niche. Really a great poem. it has some serious electricity that i can feel here.
keep writing
sincerely,
adam :)

I remember that day, too. My sister and I had stayed up the night before, watching him in CA, then satisfied with the outcome, went to bed. You can imagine our profound shock the next morning. This piece emphasized that moment in history very well.
