"X-Tinguished Dreams.Awaiting beaus -
bashful Blueroses.
Broken crystal -
crying.
Chimerical crippled daydreamer,
delicate dallier,
deceptive dropout,
disenchanted damsel.
Expectant, ethereal,
exquisitely fragile,
fanciful glass gatherer.
Greeting gentleman-callers?
Hardly.
Insubstantial introvert,
jobless,
kowtowing,
lame.
Meek menagerie maiden,
nervous -
old phonograph playing.
Peculiar
phobic
quiet
reticent
shy
suitorless spinster.
Splintered,
shattered
spirit.
Timid,
trembling,
terrified.
Unearthly unicorn valuer -
withdrawn,
x-iled.
X-amine your
zoo. "
I felt for Laura but she showed courage to blow out the candle, extinguishing her dreams and leaving the stage in darkness. I felt she did the right thing. Very interesting words written here and I enjoyed reading.

I liked the poem very much but I think I liked your author notes just as well. Great synopsis of "The Glass Menagerie" -- I love that word "menagerie" it seems to take on an existance of it's own...
But... "Uneartherly unicorn valuer" ok ok I understand the choices and the image but this line struck me funny... it just seems odd to me... or awkward.. great read my dear!... _jarls

Michael, thank you. And that is one of my favorite lines! Sigh. I'm glad you like the notes. I spent years of grad school in American Studies writing about literature, so I guess it is finally coming in handy! LOL If you come up with a way to tweak the unicorn line to get in u and v, let me know! :-) Sorry you disappeared yesterday :-)

I loved this alphabetical description of the Glass Menagerie. This was indeed one of Tennessee William's greatest plays. I am surprised that you didn't include the real cause of Laura's illness - pleurosis for "P".

Lots of times there are other things to include, like the watch and fob in Gift of the Magi, that I just can't figure out how to get into the damned thing and keep the alphabetical stucture! LOL I tried so hard with the Magi one to get watch in. Thanks so much for your lovely review from someone who obviously already knew the story! Brooke

How do you do it? I'm continually amazed at your talent!
I've not seen The Glass Menagerie, so the author notes were very helpful. I love the word chimerical - I don't think I've ever seen it used in a poem, and you do it so well. :)
This type of poetry is intriguing. Maybe I'll have to give it a try. Thanks for your great example.

Hi Brooke,
What a sad poem. Of course, it is about a sad story and you tell it well. Reminds me of a friend of mine, unfortunately.
It amazes me how you can write it from A to Z! You's just a talented woman, Ms. Brooke!
smiles,
deb

I was missing these. One day I will get up the nerve to ask you if I can read one of these at open mic nite, attributably to you of course. I know the poets that attend would really enjoy hearing any one of these. Aloud these poems sound so wonderful. The emphasis shown in the number of words in a line. Great read. Thanks for feeding my addiction of them again. joan marie

joan marie - thank you so much for wanting to share my poems with other poets! I'm so glad you like them read aloud.
There will be more :-)

I eagerly await them. I was surprised you were here this late. Or is it me that is here this late. Getting nervous about Tuesday and what better thing to do then read. I have written a final chapter to the date. An essay which outlines the police treatment I received. So I will post after midnight and will review until them. I finally figured out that in order to properly promote my work do the reviewing first then post. But I haven't received many messages of new posts by my fans. Figure people are getting ready for the holiday. jm

yes, reviewing this weekend was quite light. How long will you be in the hospital?

It's another day surgery. They will remove a piece of my scalp for biopsy. About 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 ". I have already cut my hair. Well you read the poem. I hope this goes better than the last one. Having problems getting a section of the incision to heal. It's been since 10/06. Doing wet dry bandages and I am taking a heavy dose of antibiotics. But I don't mind staying home I have been reading a lot more here and that's a good thing. jm
-
I will keep you in my prayers on Tuesday :-)
-
I appreciate that. I know that He is with me and I feel in my heart it will be ok. I think that is why I am able to have such a good sense of humor about it. jm
