This rispetto brings back that day and those times very vividly. Your poems and author notes confirm that you do live your life by those words. You write gorgeous pieces, but they also always have something of importance to convey. This poem is another example of that. Thanks for sharing this today. Mary

That was a very dark day in our history. It's so sad when evil wins like that.

Great job of expressing the sadness you're feeling. I liked the parallel between your stars and the light of idealism. Natural rhymes, nice flow and rythmn, perfectly chosen words. I especially liked the 3rd and 4th lines of the first stanza. Thank you for sharing.

Hugs,
Diane

FANTASTIC brooke- a wonderful insight to a hope we all lost on that day- But the glimmer is still there since his ripples were cast into the universe of possibilities- Hope will be again- I must believe- Write on-DINY

How come there is no six stars on this rating? I need the other star for your notes. Or, maybe I have used the two sixes I am entitled to. But believe me, Brooke, this is a six. The theme of this poem is very good. In the past I followed the Kennedy's whereabouts not only because I was interested, but also because of my job. Your poem and your notes refresh my memory again. Thanks for sharing.

I would really like to give this poem 6 stars but I have used my allowance already. This poem is direct and powerful. Every single word seems to be carefully selected and the rhythm created is staccato and adds to the tone. This poem is very moving.

Brooke,

I'd give this a six-star rating but don't have any left. This is an exceptional poem, and, as usual for your work, the sense of rhythm and the rhyme scheme are excellent.

I was twenty-seven then. I heard that RFK won the California primary and went to bed. Next day, I saw a newspaper headline. I groaned but was not at all surprised. My naive idealism had already died.

Dave

Dave, thank you - yes, you were ten years older than I, old enough to have lost the idealism - I was a junior in high school, so idealistic that it was off the charts. I appreciate your generous impulses!! Brooke :-)

It's so heartbreaking to think of that day. I can remember staring at the nenewspaper the next day and at his face as he lay on the floor. His eyes were open and I knew he was dead already before they took him away. I felt like you did. He was the hope of our nation. I never again felt the same either but I must admit Barack Obama is very close. I love Bobby's speech. Even when a wife stands up to a cruel husband and decides not to take it anymore, it sends out a ripple too. I love the poem and thank you for sharing all the information.
Love
Carol

Obama is like this for my children, who are in their 20's. I like him a whole lot, but not with that 17 year old's enthusiasm and total, utter love. Thanks so much, Carol, for your perceptive comments. Brooke :-)

Our Camelot...

I, too, have fond memories of the Kennedy family. Their family had so many tragic things happen to them, but they endured.

I remember watching and rewatching the tape of Bobby. Those emotional moments make marks on your beliefs for the rest of your life.

Thank you for reminding all of us of the sacrifices our political leaders have made for this country.

Thanks for the reminder about the "anniversary" of the extinguishing of a brilliant light. Your powerful phrases build in their intensity: first, "death of innocence," next, "naivete's erased" and finally, "idealism's light went dark." I am still against the death penalty. (I also discovered I'm older than you are, and maybe someday I can pull rank. Not likely!)

I am also still against it - have been since a child and have never wavered on that, not even when people important to me have been murdered. Many issues I have an intellectual stand on - this one is a kind of God thing with me. Thank you, Brooke :-)

It is antithetical to me that rational individuals in 2009 can conceive of TAKING a life as appropriate "punishment" for taking a life. -J

ah, but they are legion When I taught writing to 7th through 12 graders, often they would have to write opinion essays, and over the years quite a few wrote in favor of capital punishment - it would curl your toes to read essays by 12,13 year old little girls who wrote that lethal injection is too good for "these people." I had students say they should be killed using whatever method they used to kill their victims. I had students - children - say they would volunteer to do the job. Now, where did they hear this shit? From their parents, I'm guessing.

Sorry for the delay--I was taking a dinner break. I am afraid children hear this poison from their parents, other relatives, neighbors and sometimes incongruously their religious leaders ("an eye for an eye" has been inculcated for centuries). I'm sad to say that you and I would still be the exception in many communities. -Joan :c

This is a lovely tribute to someone who clearly made a great impact on your life. We have so often heard about the greatness of John F. Kennedy, but rarely hear about Robert Kennedy. (Or perhaps that's just because I live in Canada.) I wasn't aware that Robert was such a powerful politician, to be honest (gotta mention that Canada thing again! LOL) and you have enlightened me a little on the subject. Thanks for sharing!

I'm convinced he would have beaten Nixon had he lived - and so changed the course of history. Thank you for your thoughtful Canadian review! LOL Brooke :-)
