Very good, and I agree, the penny is the victim of the greed of our age, a penny did buy heaven in the 50's and it has long bought all a man (or woman) might need until our age invented inflation.
Not many people know that the Standard Unit of Currency in the UK is not the Pound, but the Penny. In old money it was one 240th of a pound weight of pure silver - hence 240 pennies in One Pound Sterling. Ah, now those were the days, a Penny was a man's wages for the day and he could feed his entire family on that.

The penny only costs 1.8 cents to make now. Boy, you sure stirred up some great memories. I really loved it. We didn't have ta candy store with all the canes you show, but the neighborhood grocery had a great supply of all kinds of penny candy. My favorites were the licorice pipes and the nickel nips. I mist those days very much and would love to feel the joy again. Best wishes and thanks for a truly great write. Best wishes. Ray.

I really enjoyed this work. What a great job telling a story in this genre of writing. You presented great images, told the story with humor, and brought back some fond memories.
I enjoyed my trip to Mr. Shrack's gas station. Thanks for sharing.

I had a cand store down the street from me when I lived in Germany. It was Pfennings that bough the Swedish Fish, but the concept is the same, I think.
Took me right back to my little boy self, Dew. Good stuff.

I'm so glad this made you think of Pfennings - it's great that even people from different countries have similar memories - thank you!

Love the candy store; I do not understand a lot of your names for local produce (being from Australia) but generally I sort out the message that is underlying your writing. We call candy - lollies! I really enjoyed the thought provoking and mouth-watering poem that you have written. Love the colours chosen to go with the candy! Ah, the good old days when sweets were real, handmade, tasted like they should. Loved the poem.

I love it that people from England, Germany and now Australia
all have similar memories even if they had different specific candies - thank you so much for sharing this and for the review!!!

I can relate to this one very much. It's the same here.
Prices went up and laters coins were no longer able to be things they used to. I was reintroduced last year but it could regain it's lost power. Thing is many people no longer wanted to use it.
Nice poem, I loved it.
Much love,
Justmade.

I had a lovely review typed here, and then the page locked up and it dissapeared so if it appears twice, I apologize.
This was a really cute poem. I liked the way it was nostalgic and took me back to a time where life sure seemed simpler and we had our priorites straight as kids! A comic book and some candy and I was good to go!
I loved the paragraph or so you wrote after the poem about Mr. Shracks gas station. It really made the poem for me. You should consider entering this or submitting it to one of the nostalgia magazines, I'll bet they would publish it!

Considering you are giving me a kind and positive review, I don't care if it shows up 5 times! ;-) Thank you and thanks for the idea about nostalgia magazines!

How sweet (pardon the punne) but this is one of those poems that brings me back to those days where candy and yes penny candy brought so much joy. Life was fun when there was candy and you had the pennies rolling around in your pocked with nothing but the anticipation and the mouth watering.
Thamk you for this piece it brought me down memory lane and back to the time of candy buying and innocence.

Yes and there was in my home town a penny icecream to be savoured. Good memories again pearl but perhaps it would have been better in free verse as the rhythm didn't flow as well as in others of your works. But thank you for the memory and I enjoy your 'turn of phrase' God Bless
