Hi Patty,
Thank you for your service.
I was in the USMC a few years before you.
I look forward to reading about your
misadventures in Army basic.
This is a good write but it seemed too short.
I wanted to continue to read and that is a good thing. Of course, I am extremely pro military and USA anyways.
Best regards,
K River

Thank you for your time to read and review. I'm glad you enjoyed this story about my induction into the US Army. I do plan on adding more to the story in different parts - next I will address basic training, and THAT will be a longer post. THANK YOU for your service, too.

First of all, let me say. Thank you for your service.
If I remember correctly, I turned 19 just when they switched over to 19 for a brief time in New York, Then I turned 21 when they switched to that. I was born Jan 3rd, so they gave me a wristband at the club New Years. I had to buy the drinks for my friends. LOL.
I need to get out of Jersey." (LOL. I'm surprised you didn't move to Palm Coast Florida. everyone here is from New Jersey. Oh, wait, Palm Coast didn't exist back then.)
I hope you write more stories about your service. This might make a good book.

Hi Patty.
An interesting read. Thinking back must have brought nostalgia and pride for having served your country.
Just a comment, for those unfamiliar with the acronyms, perhaps you could include some explanation in your Author notes. You did for WAC, but not the others.
This is a better way to write it:
Women's Army Corp (WAC)

Thank you for reading and reviewing, as always. I will go back and explain a few more of the acronyms I used - I guess I fell back into Army talk - LOL!

I have always believed all young Americans should have to serve their time in the military.
You are aware of how much it changes a person and makes them grow up.
I was thirteen years Army myself, ETS'd out after returning from Desert Shield/Desert Storm.
Military days are never forgotten.
An interesting read.

Thank you for reading and reviewing. I'm so glad I went into the military at such a young age. I think it helped to shape me into the person and I am AND I 'unlearned' some of my parents' prejudice and attitudes about the world. By the time I got out, I had been all over the country, through Europe, flown on several different types of helicopters and met people I will never forget.

Easy said, the feeling, sentiment of pride about induction as one in WAC is well-written in free flow of thoughts, typical and finer feeling structured and expressed under a catchy introduction with a conclusive clarified ending.

I'm from a 3rd generation service family myself, going all the way back to my great grandfather and all the way up to my husband. I enjoyed the read but it was too short, it left me wanting more because it is a topic I am interested in but at the same time I didn't feel that you posted enough to grab the readers attention and keep it. Its hard to comment on layout and grammar as I have found sometimes you can have everything perfect and the minute you hit publish the site changes things around so I restrain from commenting in those areas. You have a good solid voice and seem comfortable in a FPOV. I would love to see more of this biography, as one of the last WACS you have an important Add to dictionary to talk about, especially as it was at a time when the US military was starting to go through one of its first major changes in how female soldiers were considered.

Thank you so much for reading and reviewing. The six stars are wonderful, and I appreciate your kind words. I DO plan on writing more on this subject and you can look for another story sometime next week.

I think it would be great to see a story from a middle 1990's female soldier too because that's when they were first "officially" allowed female soldiers into second line units.Though I argue it goes back to WW2, how can you ignore the importance of the Russian female snippers, or women like Nancy Wake who comes from the town my partner was born in. She was so pissed off by the way the Department of Veterans affairs treated her when she got back she told them to get stuffed and left the country and never came back. Which is a shame, imagine what she could have taught current female soldiers serving in SASR units. I think it would have been awesome to go to a lecture given by her. Sadly she died a few years ago.....still having never returned to her home country because they wouldn't recognise what she had done because she was female and they didn't want females coming in at that time arguing for front line duty. There is some pretty cool docos out there about her......sorry for the rant when I get going on wake I kinda just keep going because it makes me angry.

This flowed well and I enjoyed reading it. I had no idea they were supposed to sign three females a month. I bet they do better on that nowadays than they used to.

This was an enjoyable read.
You have a nice conversational style in this piece and it flowed well, making it easy to read and it followed a logical progression.
It was interesting to read your experience in signing up - hopefully you can post some more of your military adventures. I would be interested to read them.

Hi, Patty. this is a well-written essay and very interesting. I wasn't aware that the name had changed for women in the Army. Do you mind my asking what rank did you achieve in the Army? And what was your MOS? Thanks for serving. Blessings and SemperFi, Bob

Hi Bob - thanks for stopping by! I made it to E4 (Specialist, as they didn't have Corporals anymore.) I was offered E5 (Buck Sergeant) if I had reenlisted, but my then-husband wasn't having it. My original MOS was Cook, but do to an injury I was reclassified to 71B, Clerk Typist. I think I may write a few more stories about good old Army life.
Thanks for coming along for the ride,
~patty~
