How lovely! I got goosebumps reading it. I can remember many of those Christmases. Oh, and that smell...for a while we lived in a town that was close to a paper mill and I'll never forget that odour. However, as you say, it's all about family. I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving. Being Canadian I've already celebrated Thanksgiving with our youngest daughter. Yes, it's all about family.

Thank you for the kind review of my story. I thought it interesting that you knew (I wasn't sure if any of the readers would know) what a paper mill town smells like. Ugh. :o) I also hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

This was a really touching story. I loved how you told of the best memories being the ones of struggle in the face of adversity. Those are the best. When people give when they have nothing, those memories will stay with us forever. They're what binds us all together, to feel that kind of love.
I enjoyed this story you've shared about your loving family, especially at this time of year when so many struggle.
I wish you well in this contest.

Good morning. A well written thoroughly edited short story. Memories hold us together when things get rough. Characters and dialogue realistic and without clutter.
Have a great day, hugs Mia

I do so understand "hard candy Christmas" I was raised in a construction family (feast of famine) then I did the same to my family, but thinking back some of out broker holidays were some of the better ones.

Thank you for your kind review of my story. Yes, feast or famine...a very familiar phrase. :o) My husband is now retired and he likes to say he is "now working for the government. The only problem it doesn't pay very much but it is a steady income." :o)

This is a lovely story. Often parents have no idea what really touches the heart of a child the most. It's often things that didn't cost money. The first piece I posted on this site makes just that point.."A Mother's Heart" I hope you will find time to read it. Having each other and all being healthy is worth more than any tangible item that can be bought. God bless.

What a lovely story. I love the sentiments expressed. I think in today's world we forget that children cherish our love and care and those are the things they remember most, the special family times.
