Brooke, you paint such beautiful images, both with the flower and the hummingbird. I read this poem more than once to absorb in its beauty.

The Grapes of Wrath is one of my favorite stories as well.

Oh by the way, Congratulations on your poem winning "Poem of the Month." Truly a well-deserved win. The people have spoken. You are an exceptional poet, and now a larger audience will know what I have discovered from the onset of your membership on Fanstory.

I read this with joy, since the hummingbirds have returned to my yard to drink. Sweetness personified in this piece and the ending is so true. Also my name is Rose of Sharon I'm sure from Mom having read Steinbeck's novel. Thank you for this loveliness. The hybiscus, rose of Sharon, in my yard is just now starting to break free from the chill of winter. The septolet form is followed perfectly.

Superb! There were two hummingbirds here today - the first I've seen this year - they didn't stay long - nothing in the garden that enticed them, I guess.

Thanks for sharing!

Sincerely,
Womanwriter

I enjoyed the artwork and poem alongside each other. Complementary.

As usual, excellent work. I like how you've linked the rose of sharon, nectar and hummingbird. The lines about "nectar sweet as wine" has (to me) a delicately sensual quality about it, which works well with the "rose of sharon" allusions you mentioned: the open celebration of sexuality in Song of Solomon (God's divine design); and the pregnancy (resulting from sex, of course!) of daughter Joad.

This forms such a vivid and sensual image in my mind: the colors, the sweetness, the smell of wine, the sound of the hummingbird approaching. Lovely.

Great job. Laura

I am fascinated whenever I see a humming bird feeding from the red feeders, with its wings beating faster than the human eye can keep up with
also they can fly backwards as well
nicely done, Brooke

You are such a gardnener! Rose of Sharon is so beautiful, and hummingbirds are definitely deserving of praise. They must have been the very creature to inspire someone to think of fairies! Very good job!

Sara-beth - actually, I live in an apartment complex and can't garden at all. Thanks, Brooke :-)

Once again, you have "painted" a vivid picture using a few deceptively simple words. Amazing! Keep writing. I do enjoy reading your stuff.

The rose of sharon is a flowering bush often planted to attract hummingbirds
This is something new to me. As always thanks for educating me.

God's divine design.
This line has dual meaning for me - creation of the rose of sharon to attract the hummingbird plus the creation of the humming bird itself.

I love hummingbird. I think spring is definitely in the air, a while back i remember reading Amicus' poem about hummingbirds too.

Thanks so much, Helen :-) Brooke

That's the thing I admire about you - you actually do this so people like me can be spared from going into google.

I'm suffering a bit of sunstroke from outdoor activities yesterday - it was so HOT. It's great to have some time indoors, outdoors promotion is hard work in this heat.

Hope you're having more pleasant weather.=D

I always think of Australia as the place that has all the animals we don't - I've never thought of it as a place that does NOT have an animal. LOL Thanks so much, Brooke :-)

As always, it isn't the length of the poetry but the use of the words in play. You never seem to disappoint me. Your poetry is lovely.
