I'm so glad I'm past that stage of life. Now I see my children going through hell with their kids. It's really hard to know how much and when. One can only do what they can manage. Good luck!

I had to do tough love with one of my son's. I had four. Anyway, to make a long story short, he got his act together, eventually and turned out to be a great husband and father. It is really hard but we must love then through it and we can't do it for them.

Hello, Patty,

This is a very heartfelt poem about your son and his addiction. I can imagine how hard it must be to use tough love but in your case is the smart thing to do. I hope he gets the help he needs. Good job, honey.

I hope Gregory will get himself into treatment. You're doing the right thing, tho I can only imagine how hard it is. I've known a few addicts in my time, and as long as they don't have to change, they won't. One of my relatives had to let her son spend some time in jail. He's doing OK now. Had she bailed him out, he likely would have gone right back to what he was doing.

Hang in there Patty. Until Gregory wants to help himself you are torturing yourself. It must come from him to desire to get/stay clean. When/if he is ready he will get help. I'm glad you are going to NA. It is a great source of support for the family of the addict. Marilyn

Poor you my lovely lady you are going through hell. I know the pain of addiction all too well, that is why I have never allowed myself to take certain drugs. You must be worried night and day, this evil drug is a curse that bitter smoke eats one up from the inside. Usually users reach a crisis point, normally when they can absolutely function no longer. They cannot find the money or strength to score and that is when they return to their loved ones and the good kind ones look after them. A mothers job is not just until the child is 16-18 as most think. It is for life and you must have your head in a spin, god bless you and your son and keep you and him safe until he can return. All my love Meia xx

My heart goes out to you, Patty - you're right - tough love is the hardest thing.
I don't think our adult children realise just how much we still worry about them and need to know they are OK - I think we worry more when they are out of our safe zone: home and parents love

Margaret

This work has reached the exceptional level

This is a wonderful example of how we can use poetry to give voice to our hearts. I see your pain. Being parents of adult children who are making harmful choices is agonizing. On the third line, did you mean, "I can't NOT continue...? I can relate to some of this, with my own children.
