Good morning, Ine. What time is it in New Zealand now, about 2:15 am on Sunday morning, isn't it?
In the ancient times, Witchcraft was known as 'craft of the wise' as the wise persons were those who followed the path of nature and were in tune with its forces, had the knowledge of herbs and medicines, gave wise counsel and were held in high esteem as Shamanic healers and leaders in the village and community. They understood that nature was superior to human beings and that human beings were simply one of the many parts of nature--both seen and unseen--that combine to form one whole. As Chief Seattle once said, "We do not own the earth; we are a part of it."
They understood that what we take from nature or use, we must return in kind to maintain the balance and equilibrium. The modern man has, however, forgotten this and has paid the price in form of many ecological and environmental disasters.
In looking at the etymology, or the word's history, there is the Old English "wicce" (sorcerer). Looking beyond that into the Indo European and Germanic origins, there are many theories. There are words such as "weik" (to bend or fold) and "weid" (to see or to know) that have supernatural connotations believed to have been translated into the Old English--and then to the Modern English with the word "witch". What it boils down to is the word itself has been taken from several words and meanings to label those who had abilities that were beyond what was considered the norm.
In layman's terms however, a witch is a person who practices witchcraft... a combination of ancient beliefs of the Greek, Roman, and Egyptian gods and goddesses, as well as collections around the world of old practices. In these accounts, the religion of the Earth was the most ancient of all, and where from all future religions would be born.
Good luck in your contest, Ine! ~Dean

It is a story that transforms into a history, then concludes with story again. A tale of witchcraft and the persecution of witches by Christianity. It was well written, and intriguing, although a bit disjointed. The ending does surprise, but is logically supported by the history.

You've done some excellent research in this field, Robina and it held my attention, From the inception of merely being another type of practitioner to a villain.

Superstition and fear was not the major causes of someone being accused and condemned. During the inquisition, The Church was the one who benefited most by claiming the wealth of their victims. This is well written.

Burned at the stake simply because others, who did not know how to accept a female, decided she was a witch and took vigilante revenge on her. This well written story depicts the insanity of these actions very clearly.

This is a wonderful story, Ine, I was totally engrossed. People were so ignorant back in those days, it was a dreadful era to live in. It just took one person to cast a suspicion and the person it was against was immediately put on 'trial' if that's what they called it. L think you are in with a good chance with this one. Good luck! xsx Sandra

This is a good piece, but I wouldn't call it a story. It is more like a essay on witches. I personally would focus on the girl or one witch in particular and do a story on her. Good luck in the contest and thank you for sharing.

Hello Robina,
Nice piece of Fantasy Fiction beautifully depicting its theme!
Wording is simple, impressive and perfectly matching the theme.
Smooth and captivating flow from the beginning to the end with lively imagery.
In the end and in the same context, the words 'what if' may be incorporated in a sentence to make it better. I think so.
Best of Luck!
