Dear Dean - loved this post for many reasons, I happen to agree on the oceans vastly unexplored depths. It wasn't that long ago when we thought nothing could live in the dark depths where the pressure was so intense it was thought nothing could thrive without light.....when we finally were able to get down that far low and behold an array of life that looked so freaky one has to wonder how is it surviving - yet they do. We have a tendency to put our own parameters around expectations of life. We do the same for space - dark void of life - ah but some of the "objects" moving past the space station resemble those I've seen in the deepest sea.....so I wonder are we putting limitations to what we ourselves have no knowledge on. Interesting points - loved this work though your pictures scared the crap out of me!
I'm not really good with scary stuff - tend to want to hide behind a pillow.
Great imagery, impressive story building - and skillfully penned.
Thanks for sharing - except for the scary pics:)

Thanks so much, Maureen. A "sixer", coming from a talented writer such as yourself, truly means a lot to me. I am very glad you were entertained, despite the spooky pix, LOL!

Dean. I have always enjoyed the tales of the seas. Whether fact or fiction they made great fodder for the unknown. This tale is one of them. Full of anticipation and the relentless evil that seems to be wantin' the lass. This is an excellent tale with a sad ending and a foreboding warning for future sea travelers,,,,,,Jim

Thanks very much, Jim. I know, with your historical history fiction, that I can't pull the wool over knowledgeable authors such as yourself, so my research has to be well done to get historical pieces correct. I am glad you found it both chilling, and entertaining, sir.
Thanks so much, again!

Hi Dean Kuch,
An epic tale of the sea and what some might call mythical monsters, but more recently some massive squid-like creatures have washed up on beaches and when you realise that some of the 'big' ships that originally reported encountering beasts like this were a hundred feet or less ...
Nicely done, though we are mapping and exploring more of the ocean depths now with all manner of technology. Trouble is the more we explore, the less we seem to understand ...

Thanks, Patrick, I'm truly glad you enjoyed this one.
You're absolutely correct too, we are learning more & more about our ocean's depths with each passing day, but, were we meant to? H-m-m-m-m-m...
Thanks again, my friend!

As poem it is a very well scribed work of art with a rhyme of aabb all the way through. The flow of words is gentle on the tongue and the story spun is well done. I am not however in agreement with its theology. The maiden call out for forgiveness before succumbing to death. Would not The Lord save from hell's kingdom?

Thanks very much, Ray, I appreciate the read, review and insights. As far as poor Martha goes, I suppose it all has to do with how much faith we really have when we pray. Apparently, poor Martha's faith was no so strong. Perhaps, being the daughter of a wealthy family, it was the first time she'd ever felt the need to have to pray at all. I'll leave that part up to the readers to decide.
Thanks again, much obliged!

If you find you're out to sea, moon glow's forsaken the darkened sky,
listen closely, lasses...you might hear... a dainty young maiden's cry.
A new young gal I'm seeking, you see, so make sure your faith is true,
Or I'll rise up from beneath the sea, and my next bride might be you!
I was just thinking yesterday - where could you be, Dean!!
I see you've come back to haunt us with your creepy dark poems - a great write, but I won't worry about him when he comes looking for a new young bride, because, thankfully, my age is against me.
welcome back, my friend.

It is great to be writing again, thank you, Margaret. As a side note, I almost chose the name Margaret for the ill-fated damsel in this one. Good thing I didn't, 'ey? LOL...

You didn't read the message I left of my extended absence. I won't be here much, but I'll write a review now and then. Great poem.

Thank you, JM. I won't be here too much, either. Trying to shop my wares to publishers is a full-time job and quite a daunting task! It takes up the majority of my free time. I really appreciate the read and kind review. Email me sometime, my friend...

Ok, I'll email you. Good luck on your search.

In the heyday of whaling blue whale were caught that had sucker marks that estimated that squid were 100 feet long. In a tragedy in Newfoundland squid of 40 ft were washed uo on a beach; ore recently the Calfornia coast. Your monster is hideous and resemble the Alien of movie fame. In multimedia you can't be beat for poetry, story and graphics. I wish I had a six.

Really excellent pictures to complement this horror poem. A virgin goes on the boat and thought first she was safe. But the got attacked and she died. The mistake she made was praying to the devil.

Thanks, robina, I appreciate your viewpoint.
Actually, poor Martha's heart was in the right place as she'd muttered her prayers, but therein lie the problem, she muttered them. Her faith was weak, she never really believed she'd be saved. Alas, because of that, she happened to be right.
Thanks again...
