Fantastic opening. 'That was back when we lived life rather than simply watching it.'
Another great statement: In the eighties ... If the television was off, it was generally assumed it was broken.
Thank God I don't have any TV Nazi's who demand sports TV in my house.
Yes, I think it's all over after the Super Bowl. Don't the viewers know that these guys are literally killing themselves on the field? I can't bear to watch brain-damage in the arena we call a stadium.
Bravo, well written.

Hi Dejohnsrld, I liked the short easy and how you highlighted the development of TV and power off button. Today, no one shuts off their TV even when there are not watching. Others would not sleep with out TV on. Your narration could have been expounded further. For example, in the 70s and 80s, you could consider describing the channels available. In contrast, show how you can handily keep tabs of the various channels today. Hope you write more in regards to this chapter. Great job!

Well penned Debbie, I don't watch TV so I guess I am safe. So long as no one takes away my books.
I enjoyed the read and thought you did a great job on it.

Dear Debbie, I grew up in the 60s and 70s. We were not allowed to watch TV except for a 30 minute local news program and a 30 minute church program on Sunday before Church. We always played outside. It had the opposite effect on me. I love college football and watch it all I can even though my husband, couldn't care less. Why? Because I can! :) I loved your writing, Shirley

I had to smile at your essay, especially since I'm upstairs watching what else ... football. Well, at least my wife and daughter are downstairs on the BIG, NEW TV, watching whatever inane thing they're watching. Bill

This excellent article calls to mind a lost world, really not so far distant in time, when our values were different. I have asked the staff in local bars to switch the blaring TV set off, because nobody's watching it, and I am trying to have a conversation with my friend. The barkeeper looks at me like I just spoke Swahili.
