This is a dilemma that way too many people have faced and too many animals have endured. At the very LEAST, a loved animal should be taken to a no-kill shelter!
The pathos with which you have written this story is very strong and I hope will reach out to those who are at their wit's end. I think I'd sell my car and walk the streets with my dog before I'd abandon him.
The three points of view work well--from the woman to the dog to the house (which we often wonder what it might be thinking.)
The colors blinking in the rhythm of the pouring rain is a powerful ending, suggesting the hopelessness of it all.

Hi J.P. ! Thank you. I agree...I have carried my cat in a vehicle with me for weeks while house hunting. I left her once at a kennel...and she almost died from fleas and not eating. I promised her I would never let that happen again. So, she has learned to travel and be in motel rooms. Thank you so very much...this is a great review! Susan

I hated this one, Suze! I knew I needed to beware the minute I saw the picture and then the title. Oh, how tragic. I hate that she didn't do the responsible thing and take the dog to a shelter rather than drive away like that. Anyway, very well written.

Hi Susan,

This story is a tear jerker if I ever read one. My little dog was abandoned too and I am so glad I took her in and gave her a good home. The girl in this story has way too much grief and I wonder what happened to her. You have once again written an superb story and I wish I could give you a six. Blessings, chey

Too many times animals of all kinds get left behind when the owners decide to move for whatever the reason. Well done with your sad story, Buck

Hi again! Hey, thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed this. I love to try to 'see' things from animals points of view...and right or wrong, I really believe they are much smarter and know tons more than some people think they do? What would our world be like without them?? :/ susan

Wow. How sad. Unfortunately, this storyline has become a reality for many. As the U.S. became worse, countless pet suddenly found themselves homeless.

Thanks for sharing this heart-breaking tale. JW

HI Jonathon...I know...they were letting horses out in Brown County State park in southern Indiana to the tune of several a week in '08 and '09...a friend of ours became a rescue farm then. She is doing it still. And I may have to give her my three if things keep going as they are. Hay is over four bucks a bale. (small bales). And it only lasts a few days for three...NOT good. I don't know what will happen. Anyway, thank you for a lovely review Jonathon. Susan

Realist. Right you are. I chose to read your story because of the sad picture of the dog. I'm glad that I did because I enjoyed your piece. Nice job. Carole

Hi Sasha! The pix compelled this story. I just hate it when pets are left. It's just unspeakable. I've been homeless in rain JUST like this. And maybe I was the dog here. I feel like it most of the time...hugs and a thousand thank you's my friend...Susan

I couldn't help but cry. This pour dog. The girl will make it.People tend to let go of the one thing that will stand by them no matter what. Sad story.

Hi Carolyn! Thank you dear. Me too. I know this feeling, as I've been right where this dog in the picture is. I may do a part two to this...to save them both.? I don't know. Thank you again my friend. Susan

This work has reached the exceptional level

I was dreading clicking on the link as soon as I saw the picture because I was afraid of what it would do to me...and I'm afraid I was right. I had said to myself I wouldn't break down but I couldn't come through with my words. This was wonderfully written and I understand every single word that was used. As yourself, I share the same passion for dogs and cats. Now, I'm eagerly anticipating going home and hugging my dogs who always seem to embrace me with such joy and warmth. Thank you, this was beautifully written.
