I like the last line "The Yankees won, "Just hear me cry." This could be taken two ways. Being nice about the opposition winning - crying because your team lost. Very subtle. Not knowing about your teams but knowing how passionate Americans are about footie - well done and gracefully (tongue in cheek) written!

Thank you, Kay - not many people picked up on the word play with "cry," so thank you for noticing that in particular! Glad you enjoyed my insincere humor, too. Brooke :-)

The World Series is like the Superbowl - lots and lots of fans of the sport watch besides fans of the two teams involved. Thanks, Grace, for you thoughtful review :-) Brooke

The Yankees won; I want to stew --
they beat my Phillies, brave and true.
If my boys won, I would have crowed,
but since we lost, I owe this ode.
I was rooting for the Phillies. It wouldn't have matter who the Yankees were playing, I root for the other team.
Love your poem! The humor is great, and it barely masks your disappointment.

A great ode, indeed! I'm not a Yankees
fan, nor a fan of baseball in general, and the
only game I ever saw in person was between the
Phillies and Washington. I'm sorry your team lost,
but at least they were in it. I think you've fulfilled your bet obligation admirably! Loved the poem! Carolyn

"Reluctant Ode" is funny and true and so much fun to read. Not being a fan of any team, my perspective is truly objective, and this poem says it best from opposite the Yankees. Well done as always!

Lol, at least they made it to the finals. i am afraid our Texas rangers haven't seen such a victory in decades and our cowboys have faded a bit as well!

Clever and sweet, brings a chuckle not only for your Philly's loss, but for all the losses each of us suffers daily: the rejection letter in the mail, the guy (or girl) who said they'd call but didn't, the promotion we were promised before the downsizing that happened instead. Perfect cadence. No suggestions or corrections. later and God bless, shy

Hee-hee, As a Brit, it goes a bit over my head LOL I take it it is what you call football? To us it is a lot of sissys, running around, well protected, a bit like out Rugby! Just taking the wizz!
