Isn't it amazing how long memories of smell linger? I still love the smell of diesel trucks and for no other reason than as a small boy the rolling stores which brought all those delightful candies was diesel. Eloquently expressed, Brooke. I see that it did very well in the contest. My best. Roger.

Well, if that isn't the most fascinating reason I've ever heard for liking a smell!!! What a great association. Thank you, Roger, for sharing that and for your kind review. Brooke :-)

I know we share many of the same experiences re: our mothers. Congrats on the win! It is a lovely poem that invokes many scent sensations. The only way I remember my mom is through pictures and stories. I wish I COULD remember in the way you do! Sue

What a sweet little poem, Brooke. I'm sorry that I missed this contest, for I would certainly have voted for this poem. But I see that it didn't need my help. Congratulations.

This poem got me in the mood to go out and buy a nice perfume and some cinnamon buns. It's nice that you have such beautiful memories of your mother. Only one of my relatives have died, and that's my grandfather. I remember him fondly, but I don't have any detailed memories of him. He died when I was twelve, so I guess that's why.

Penya, by the time I was 16 I had lost my mother and stepmother, and my only surviving grandparent died when I was 19. - I hope your family stays healthy for a long, long time.
Thank you, Brooke :-)

Oh Brooke! You won't believe this but my mother always, always wore Emeraud perfume. And I've been wearing it for about 40 tears. I couldn't believe it when I read your poem. And the dough sticks with the cinnamon inside she made for us all the time. Her birthday is this month. Your poem is very descriptive of the smells. Thanks for shocking me.

Hi Brooke,
This is a beautifully written minute featuring those smells that trigger the memory of your mother. I have similar memory smells from childhood that will last me my entire life. You do a wonderful job of bringing the reader into this delicious concoction of smell and memory. This is a super contest entry. Wishing you the best of luck. Cheers... ;0) Art

I remember voices Brooke of all of the people who were closest to me that have gone back home, but I also know what you mean about the sense of smell too. Your Mom is always with you because she knows you miss her, Good stuff.

Hullo Adewpearl ...
In addition to this being a well-written and attractively presented entry for the Contest, your words and your Notes at the end have gone straight to my heart.
How you must cherish the memory of the fragrance of your dear Mother's perfume ... and the delicious aroma from her baking. Even the memory of the bleach she used ... and the smell of the tea she poured ... are treasures for you.
Thank you for sharing this with us and I wish you well in the Contest.
With love from ... Nanette Mary.

Thank you, Nanette Mary. Yes, my memories are few so even her scrubbing the floor is a precious memory to me. Brooke :-)

Dear Brooke, how poignant is this minute poem, especially as I've known and thought about your trauma for a long time now. I've read it to Jinny and we've discussed it; she likes it too. You are right about smell and memory and it works also when students revise in an atmosphere of lavender and studies show that this improves recall. Is emeraude a perfume here? Please lighten my darkness. Peter

Yes, it is a perfume put out by Coty. It is not nearly as popular today as it was in the 50's. My mother usually smelled of white bars of ivory soap, but she put on two drops from this tiny bottle of perfume when she and my father went out somewhere fancy, which probably wasn't more often than once a month. I still have the green box with the tiny bottle in it with a bit of perfume left - one of my few "heirlooms" from her. Brooke
