Exceptional
This work has reached the exceptional level

An ominous sense of foreboding pervades the stanzas painting the reality of our times- of course, as the poet outlines in the footnote, it is not total reality of life -there is a hint of light 'Everything is waiting on light.' Heaney is one of my favourites also.

This extended metaphor speaks strongly of the greyness and desolation currently on display in the contemporary world, where kids spend more time texting than talking to people, commercialism is rampant and spirituality frequently seems absent. The last few lines introduce a faint sense of hope that things may get better, as we are "waiting on light". I hope this proves true.

Thanks for the excellent review and I am glad you caught the inferals of the imagery, the sense of a flat, soulless world, out of that frozen bronze portrayal of the scene. I wanted at the end to equate hope with love. estory

Good morning Story,
I am delighted to read your authors notes ( I often read authors notes before reading a poem) as it explains what is going on in your poem.
Losing my father was very difficult although he was 96 years old, so I relate to your pain.
Not sure what a chain link style is...and I have been writing poetry for quite sometime...I need to look it up,
Lisa

Thanks for the excellent review and that you understood where I was coming from in writing this piece. I got a lot of influence from Heaney over the years and I think if you read a piece like Relic of Memory from Door into the Dark, you will see where I got this format. estory

I especially like the beautiful image penned in your concluding verse. Light and love have much in common.

While this world is presently being flooded with waves of darkness, life always has a flip side. As a person of faith, I can look up through the clouds and picture Revelation 21:23-24a -- And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, because the glory of God illuminates the city, and the Lamb is its lamp. By its light the nations will walk....

Thanks for the excellent review and your perspective on the poem. I am writing here about the world on the doorstep of its end, but I am glad you caught that equation of light with hope. estory

Thanks for the notes. The format suits the subject matter and I think your choice of wording is appropriate. Lets face it the world is in a mess but it is always good to hold out some hope. Welcome back to fanStory. Take care and have a wonderful day.
Regards
Barry Penfold.

If you intention was to write a very somber and depressing poem, you have succeeded. I'm glad you mentioned you wrote it during a state of yourpersonal grief due to the death of your father. We don't live in a perfect world, but I've never felt grief that deeply. There is too much left to be thankful for.

Thanks for the excellent review and your perspective on the poem. I wanted to write a portrayal of a world on the doorstep of its end. What gives me hope is the coming of Christ. And not much else. estory

This is a very mournful verse and I can understand that you were very depressed at the time because there's nothing to lighten the mood here. I didn't actually find this to have a stopping and starting halting pace but was more impressed with the flow and enjambment which effectively captured the stillness of this decaying world. Thanks for sharing. Debbie

Thanks for the excellent review and your support of the poem. It is a portrayal of a world on the doorstep of its end. I am glad the style seemed to work, the construction. I was heavily influenced by Heaney in much of my poetry writing. estory

Your poem certainly provides an accurate sketch of the world today -- especially, if we look from distance and see all the hate and lack of compassion. I prefer to look at the smaller crannies where love still lives and people still care. My philosophy is to bloom where planted and try to make the world better place where i live. Indeed death is an essential part of life, both ours and those with whom we have chosen to walk this earthly path. One can never get over grief, but must walk through it gatthering as many memories as possible to fill those pockets of void.

I am glad you posted this poem and more pleased that I read it. ann

Thanks for the excellent review and your perspective on the piece. I am glad it seems to have been so evocative; I did not expect this strong of a response from the readers and members. But writing can often surprise you that way. Stuff that you feel is top notch often doesn't catch on with the public, and stuff you feel is second rate they love. estory

I think someone said that death is part of life, if one examines the seasons, all the elements, and the four ages of man are all contained therein. The one thing about seasons, is hidden a fifth reality, which most, sadly, it isn't obvious to most, death being the final curtain, beautifully written my friend, blessings

I'd comment on the nature of your poem, but you, in your comments, did so more eloquently I ever could. The interplay of the images is brilliant. As I draw closer to life's end, I, too, await His Light and a reunion with my wife.
